Season course
The season started with a 3-0 away win for IFK Göteborg at Kalmar FF on March 13 of that year, and the winner was also named leader of the first match day. On the second day of play, BK Häcken took over the top of the table after two wins at the start, which the club had to give up to Helsingborgs IF on the fifth day of the game . The team, like Malmö FF and BK Häcken, remained undefeated after five games , while the reigning champions AIK , Åtvidabergs FF , Kalmar FF and Trelleborgs FF were at the bottom of the table without a win of the season.
Until the 1-0 defeat against Kalmar FF on matchday 14, Helsingborgs IF remained undefeated and had thus expanded their lead over regional rivals Malmö FF as a pursuer to up to five points. Already at a certain distance were Örebro SK , IF Elfsborg and Mjällby AIF in the middle of the season. In the bottom third of the table, AIK, Åtvidabergs FF and Trelleborgs FF were relegated to the middle of the table, but with 15 plus points AIK and Trelleborgs FF were only three points behind IFK Göteborg's ninth place in the table.
After a small series of games without a win, Helsingborgs IF's lead over Malmö FF was reduced to just one point on matchday 19. Two game days later, MFF took over the lead in the season for the first time after a 1-0 win over IF Elfsborg due to a 3-0 away defeat of the competitor at Örebro SK. As a result, a duel developed between the teams, from the 24th matchday the two clubs were tied at the top. Until the last matchday, Malmö FF were in first place due to the better goal difference . With a 2-0 win against Mjällby AIF on the last day of the match, the club claimed first place and won the championship title. Helsingborgs IF came in the parallel game against Kalmar FF only to a 0-0 draw. Nevertheless, the playing time for the club was not without a title win, one week after the end of the season, the team decided the cup final for themselves.
Behind the top duo, the fight for the second Europa League starting place flared up. At the end of the second third of the season, Örebro SK and IF Elfsborg had set themselves apart from the competition, which formed a close midfield. A preliminary decision was made on the fourth last day of the match when ÖSK was able to expand its lead over the competition to five points. After the penultimate game day the difference was even eight points, but fell back on the last game day. After the cup victory of the runner-up Helsingborgs IF, who was eligible to start by winning the Europa League title, IF Elfsborg moved up to qualify for the Europa League in fourth place.
In the relegation battle, Gefle IF slipped onto the relegation place for the first time on the 17th matchday, a short time later the team even occupied a direct relegation place. The team from Åtvidabergs FF had established themselves here, although there was always contact with the places in the lower midfield. On the 23rd match day the club jumped to a non-relegation place and displaced AIK and IF Brommapojkarna to the following places. After 16th matchdays with 22 points placed in the front half of the table, Bromma remained without a win in the following games until the end of the season and slipped to the bottom of the table. Three game days before the end of the season, the club occupied the relegation places tied with Gefle IF, the gap to the relegation place occupied by Åtvidabergs FF was already four points. After a win over GAIS and a draw against Djurgårdens IF , Gefle IF swapped places due to the better goal difference with the competitor. Although ÅFF scored points against AIK on the last matchday, Gelfe IF retained the upper hand after a 2-2 draw at IFK Göteborg after 0-2 deficit and saved themselves in relegation.
