GIF Sundsvall is a Swedish football club based in Sundsvall .
The football club played after 3rd place in the Superettan 2007 in the 2008 season in the highest Swedish league, the Allsvenskan . But only for one season. 15th place meant relegation. The return to the Allsvenskan succeeded in 2011 by reaching 2nd place in the Superettan.
history
The association was founded on August 25, 1903 as Godtemplarnas Idrotts Förening ( German : Sportvereinigung der Guttempler ), but in 1920 it lifted its sobriety law and since then has been called Gymnastik och Idrotts Föreningen Sundsvall ( German : Gymnastik- und Sportvereinigung Sundsvall ). The club has been promoted and relegated very often since the permission for sports clubs from Norrland to play in the Allsvenskan , and played continuously in the highest Swedish league from 1999 to 2005.
At home, the audience record was 16,507 spectators on October 15, 1961 against Högadals IS .
Two of the most famous former players of the sports club are Tomas Brolin and Emil Forsberg .
The club's ice hockey department took part in the 1940 and 1942 seasons in the Swedish championship , which was then still held in cup mode .
