Rikard Norling (born June 4, 1971 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish football coach . After a short playing career, he initially worked as a coach, mainly in the youth field, before coaching various clubs in higher-class Swedish and Norwegian football from 2002. In 2013 he won the Swedish championship with Malmö FF and in 2018 with AIK .

Career

Short playing career and through youth work to an assistant coach

Norling began playing football at IK Bele . There he played in the youth team on the side of the future Swedish national player Johan Mjällby . In 1987 he switched to the youth team at IF Brommapojkarna . He later came under coach Erik Hamrén at the side of Fredrik Espmark and Pascal Simpson four times in Division 1 Norra and was able to score a goal before he had to end his career early as a 20-year-old.

Norling moved to the coaching bench and initially worked for IF Brommapojkarna in youth work. From 1994 he coached his home club IK Bele in the fourth-class division 3 Östra Svealand . After missing only one point in the first year to participate in the promotion round to the third division, the team was knocked off fifth under Norling in the second year.

In 1996, Norling accepted an offer from the AIK to look after the junior team of the first division as a youth coach. In 1998 he moved up as an assistant to the competition team that competed in the Allsvenskan and had won the Swedish national cup in previous years . Under the new coach Stuart Baxter , the club was national champion and again cup winner. The Scot reached the group stage of the 1999/2000 Champions League with the AIK team and after he was banned from the game against Arsenal after a verbal dispute with the fourth official at the clash with FC Barcelona , Norling took his place in the coaching bench at Wembley . After Baxter's departure in 2000, Olle Nordin took over the coaching position and Norling returned to the youth work.

First steps in adult education and Trainer of the year in Sweden

In 2002 he left the AIK and took over the coaching position at Väsby IK . Long-time AIK professional Nebojša Novaković worked at his side as a playing assistant coach. With the club, the two were immediately season winners in the third-class division 2 Östra Svealand , but the team failed in the promotion games after two defeats at Bodens BK . Also in 2003 succeeded the relay victory, again the promotion was only missed in the promotion round. After a 4: 3 away win in the first leg, Friska Viljor FC were able to afford a 2: 3 home defeat in order to move up to the second division according to the away goals rule .

In the 2004 season , Norling took over his first coaching position at GIF Sundsvall as the responsible coach in the Allsvenskan. As a coaching duo together with Patrick Walker , he was able to maintain relegation with the club. Nevertheless, he left the club after only one season.

Norling returned to the AIK. The club was relegated from the Allsvenskan last year and aimed to return directly to the Swedish House of Lords. Under the direction of Norlings, who again assisted Novaković, the team was clearly second division champions with nine points ahead of the table runner-up Östers IF . In the first division, Norling knew how to surprise with his team. For a long time the team fought against IF Elfsborg for the Lennart Johansson Cup , which the Swedish national champions receive. At the end of the season, the team had a better goal difference on one point behind the club from Borås and had to be satisfied with the runner-up. After the end of the 2006 season he was named coach of the year. In the 2007/08 UEFA Cup, he led the team through qualifying in the first main round, in which the team failed after a 0-0 draw and a 0-1 defeat at Hapoel Tel Aviv . In the league, the team missed qualifying for an international competition at the end of the 2007 season as fifth. After the success also failed to materialize in the following season, Norling was relieved of his duties at the end of the season and replaced by Mikael Stahre .

From the second division to the Swedish championship

In December 2009, the second division Assyriska Föreningen presented Norling as the new chief coach from January 1, 2010. He signed a two-year contract with the club from Södertälje . At the end of the second division season in 2010 , he finished fourth with the team and missed the relegation place occupied by his former club GIF Sundsvall by five points.

In the early summer of 2011, Norling moved to the reigning champions Malmö FF to replace Roland Nilsson who had migrated to Denmark . With the team, he missed the group stage of the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League in the final qualifying round and finished last in the group stage of the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League . After the club had weakened in the league in the meantime, he led the club in the end of the season to fourth place in the table, so that the renewed European Cup qualification was just missed. The 2013 season was all the more successful when he won the Swedish championship with the club.

Commitment abroad

A few weeks after the end of the season, Norling announced his departure from Malmö FF. A few days later, Brann Bergen announced the appointment of the coach, who signed a contract valid until 2016. At the turn of the year he caused irritation at his former club, as he recruited fitness trainer Simon Holyhead from his previous coaching staff contrary to agreements. He announced his departure from Malmö FF in early January. Ultimately, the two clubs agreed to change at the end of January. Nevertheless, there was no success at his new club, for a long time the team was in a direct relegation zone during the 2014 season . Only on the penultimate game day did she advance to the relegation place, which she confirmed on the last game day. After a 1-1 draw in the relegation first leg against Mjøndalen IF, however , a 3-0 defeat in the second leg meant relegation to the second division. Here the club initially stuck to him, but after the team was only in midfield in the 1st division , he was prematurely dismissed at the end of May 2015 after a 1: 4 defeat against newly promoted Levanger FK .

Norling doing training (May 2016)

In May 2016, Norling returned to the AIK as head coach, where he signed a contract until the end of 2019 as the successor to the resigned Andreas Alm . After places at the top of the table, he led the team to the twelfth championship title in the club's history in the 2018 season , and in the following season he missed a return to the European Cup with the team as fourth in the table. After the team found themselves in the bottom third of the table after almost a third of the season in the 2020 season, he was dismissed from the club.
