Per Karlsson (born January 2, 1986 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish football player . The defender , who was Swedish champion and cup winner with AIK , played through all of the Swedish youth national teams and made his debut in the senior national team in 2010 .

Career

Karlsson started playing football at Vasalunds IF . Those in charge of the first division AIK discovered his talent and in 1998 brought him into their own youth department. There he developed into a young national player and made his debut in the national jersey for the U-15 national team of Sweden in a 4-2 victory over the Finnish U-15 selection alongside players like Ajsel Kujović , Labinot Harbuzi or Oskar Rönningberg . In the following years he was able to establish himself among the best players of his year and was a regular member of the junior national teams.

In the 2003 season Karlsson moved up to the professional squad of the traditional club. He made his debut in the first team on May 29 of the year when he was substituted on for Jimmy Tamandi in the 75th minute of a cup match against BK Häcken . It took some time before he was able to fight his way into the squad for an Allsvenskan game in the summer and took a seat on the bench. He made his first division debut in the 3-1 away defeat at Örgryte IS when he came on for Krister Nordin on July 23 of that year in Gothenburg with ten minutes before the end of the game . In the following years he vacillated between the grandstand and substitute bench and did not come to any further use in his first season in professional football. It wasn't until the middle of the 2004 season that he established himself in the squad and, when Fredrik Björck and Per Nilsson dropped out due to injury, temporarily a regular place in the defense chain in front of goalkeeper and team captain Håkan Svensson . Towards the end of the season he was one of the substitutes again and after a complicated broken tibia in early May of next year he was out until the end of the season.

In order to let Karlsson come to match practice, he switched to Väsby United on loan in 2006 , at the time the farm team AIKs, in the Superettan . There he could not assert himself and was on the bench at the beginning of the season. During a training match against AIK's second team after the third matchday in early May, he broke his arm and was again out for a long time. Without having played a league game for the club, he returned to AIK at the end of the season and was loaned out again for the following season at his own request. In order not to end up as a substitute for regular players Nicklas Carlsson and Niklas Sandberg on the bench, he went to Åtvidabergs FF in the Superettan. As a regular player in defense, he reached sixth place in the second division with the club from Östergötland and returned to the national jersey after an interruption due to his injuries. In the 4-2 win over the U21 Latvia , he ran alongside Tom Siwe , Mattias Bjärsmyr and Martin Olsson in the defensive lineup of the Swedish U21 national team .

For the 2008 season Karlsson returned to AIK after two years in the second division. Since coach Rikard Norling initially preferred Daniel Arnefjord , Walid Atta , Pierre Bengtsson and Nils-Eric Johansson in the regular formation, he was initially again on the bench. From the fifth matchday on, however, he was able to establish himself in the starting eleven and maintain a regular place. After he had played in nine of the eleven games of the season up to the summer break of the Swedish league in 2009, he was appointed to the Swedish squad at the U- at the end of May by the selection coaches Tommy Söderberg and Jörgen Lennartsson at the side of his club colleagues Gabriel Özkan and Pierre Bengtsson. 21 European Championship in their own country .

After Karlsson failed with the U-21 selection only in the semi-finals, he was more successful at club level. In all of his 26 season games in the starting line-up, he made a decisive contribution to winning the Lennart Johansson Cup for the Swedish national champions at the end of the season. He also stood alongside Jos Hooiveld in central defense in the cup final against IFK Göteborg and celebrated the double after the 2-0 win with goals from Mauro Iván Óbolo and Antônio Flávio . He had distinguished himself through good performances in the course of the season, so that national coach Erik Hamrén appointed him to the national team for the opening international games in 2010. In the 1-0 victory over the national selection of Oman on January 20 of that year through a goal by Anders Svensson , he made his debut in the national jersey. In the following season, in which the team played against relegation, mostly regular players, he injured his gluteal muscles in September. Despite a warning from the medical department, coach Alex Miller ordered back to the team three weeks later , the injury broke out again and prevented further missions until the end of the season in November.

Niklas Backman and Alexander Milošević established themselves as regular players in central defense, slowed down due to injury . Despite only six appearances in the course of the season, shortly after the end of the 2011 season, he reached an agreement with the vice-champion's club officials to extend his contract, which expired in 2012, and signed a new three-year contract. In the course of the following season he established himself as a regular on the defensive, in the 2013 season coach Andreas Alm placed him in the starting line-up in all 30 games of the season. Due to his good performance, he returned to the national team, as part of the qualification for the 2014 World Cup , Hamrén appointed him to replace the injured Jonas Olsson in the squad for the clash with Germany, although he was not used and in the play-off game Against Portugal the recovered Olsson belonged to the squad, he was in the first squad for the winter tour of the Swedish national team in early 2014. However, due to an inflammation in his knee, he had to cancel in January and was replaced by AIK team-mate Backman.

After his recovery, Karlsson was also an undisputed regular player in the 2014 season, whereupon the club extended his contract in May of that year until the end of 2017.
