Gabriel Özkan (born May 23, 1986 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish football player of Aramaic descent. The midfielder was part of the AIK squad in 2009 when the team won the Swedish championship.

Career

Özkan started playing football at FC Inter Orhoy . In 1999 he moved to the youth department of IF Brommapojkarna . With the club's youth team, he won the Swedish championship in 2001 and 2002. In 2004 he moved up to the club's men's team and came in the Superettan made his debut in Swedish professional football. The midfielder quickly gained a regular place. With good performances he played his way into the field of vision of the first division teams and in the summer of 2006 he switched to AIK .

He fitted in well with his new employer: on his debut in the AIK jersey in the 3-1 defeat at Malmö FF on July 15, he came on for Kenny Pavey in the 71st minute of the game and scored in the final minute the consolation goal . Joker in the following games, he was able to fight for a regular place until the end of the round and played a total of ten season games. He was then appointed to the Swedish U21 team and made his debut on November 14, 2006 in the 2: 4 defeat by France's U21 team in the jersey of the youth national team.

In preparation for the 2007 season, Özkan was injured in a game against GIF Sundsvall . Therefore he missed the season opener and did not return to training until the end of March. However, in the period that followed, it was susceptible to further injuries and was only used irregularly in the following years. Nevertheless, he returned to the U-21 team in 2009 after some attractive performances in the Allsvenskan and the selection coaches Tommy Söderberg and Jörgen Lennartsson appointed him to the U-21 squad alongside his club mates Pierre Bengtsson and Per Karlsson at the end of May 2009 -European Championship in Sweden . Following the tournament, Özkan was able to maintain his regular place at AIK before he was injured again in mid-July and was out for several weeks. After his recovery, he was mainly used as a substitute and contributed with two goals this season in a total of 14 games this season to win the Lennart Johansson Cup for the national championship. In the cup final against IFK Gothenburg , which ended with goals from Mauro Iván Óbolo and Antônio Flávio with a 2-0 win, he was not part of the squad.

Because of an abdominal muscle injury and problems with a nerve, Özkan successfully underwent an operation in early 2010. At the end of April he returned to the football field and played a few games as a substitute. When he made his comeback in the starting XI in August of that year, he had to leave the field after 25 minutes of play with suspected broken leg. Ultimately, the injury turned out to be a torn ligament. Nevertheless, he remained without use in the further course of the season. In preparation for the following season he injured himself again and had to have another foot operation. By the end of the 2011 season , there were only six appearances as substitutes, but the club extended the year-end contract by two years at the end of November. After another injury in preparation for the following season, he again did not prevail as a regular and was regularly on the substitution bench, with seven appearances this season only came about in the starting lineup.

In January 2013, his ex-club IF Brommapojkarna, who had been promoted to the Allsvenskan, announced the commitment of Özkan, who signed a two-year contract. Here, too, he was not spared from injuries, so that he was only used temporarily in the first division and mainly acted as a substitute. He was already relegated early on with the team supervised by Stefan Billborn in the 2014 season , so that speculation about the future arose in view of the susceptibility to injury and his expiring contract.
