Kyriakos "Kenny" Stamatopoulos ( Greek Κυριάκος Σταματόπουλος , born August 28, 1979 in Kalamata , Greece ) is a Greek- Canadian football goalkeeper . He currently plays for AIK Solna in Sweden's top division , the Allsvenskan .
Career
The beginnings
At the age of six months, his family moved with him to the largest city in Canada , Toronto . In his youth he played a lot of ice hockey , but also baseball and American football . At the age of 17, his family decided to move back to Greece, where he started his active career as a football goalkeeper .
Professional football
Stamatopoulos began his career in 1999 with FC Kalamata in Beta Ethniki , the second division of Greece . For Kalamata FC, he played ten league games between 1999 and 2003. In the summer of 2003 he finally moved to Sweden to Enköpings SK in the Superettan . At Enköpings SK he made a total of 40 championship appearances from 2003 to 2005, before he transferred to the Bodens BK in Division 1 for a year in 2005 and appeared 30 times for the team.
In 2006 he moved to Norway to Tromsø IL in the Tippeligaen . From 2006 to 2007 Stamatopoulos came to a total of 14 appearances in the league before he was loaned to Canada to the MLS franchise Toronto FC . He made his MLS debut on August 5, 2007 in the game against Los Angeles Galaxy . In the top division of North America he came to a total of twelve games before returning to Norway in January 2008 to Tromsø IL. After three more appearances for Tromsø in the 2008 season, he played in the 2009 calendar year on loan with the Norwegian clubs Lyn Oslo and Fredrikstad FK .
For the 2010 season Stamatopoulos was awarded to the Swedish first division club AIK Solna . He was then firmly committed by AIK and became a regular goalkeeper in the 2013 season after the surprising death of his teammate Ivan Turina when he played for AIK in 26 league games. However, he could not hold his regular place in the following seasons; in the 2014 season , Stamatopoulos only made eight league appearances.
In 2018 he ended his active career and became a goalkeeping coach at AIK.
International
Stamatopoulos has both Canadian and Greek citizenship. He decided in his youth to play for the national teams of Canada.
In 2001 Stamatopoulos took part in the Jeux de la Francophonie with the Canadian U-23 selection . In the same year he also made his debut for the Canadian national team . Since then he has been on occasional missions at irregular intervals.
In 2002 and 2009 he was a substitute goalkeeper in the Canadian squad for the CONCACAF Gold Cup . Also in 2015 he was nominated again and stood on July 8 in the first match of Canadians against El Salvador ( 0: 0 ) in the starting.
