Enköpings Sportklubb is a Swedish sports club from Enköping . The club is best known for its ice hockey and soccer departments .

history

Enköpings SK was founded on March 2nd, 1914. For a long time played the football team of the club in the third division before 1938 as a master of Östsvenskan promotion to the Division 2 Norra succeeded. In 1940, however, the team had to descend again from the second division. 1946 succeeded again the championship in the regional third division. After promotion games against Hallstahammars SK and IK City , in which a third decider had to be scheduled in addition to the two regular games, they returned to the second division and the club was nicknamed "Svenska mästare i kval" - Swedish champions of the Promotion Games. The second division season ended as a debacle, however, only one game could be won and the team went down again - due to a restructuring of the league system even in the newly created fourth division, Division 4 .

In the following years, ESK was initially an elevator team , before it succeeded in 1965 to establish itself permanently in the third division. After 14 years in the league, they returned to the second division in 1978. However, as table twelfth at the end of the 1979 season, two points were missing from the eleventh place occupied by IFK Västerås , which would have meant relegation, and ESK returned to the third division. As second in the table, the team missed direct promotion in the following season and in the following years again places in the front midfield, but the club had to wait until 1985 before a 2-1 win and a 1-1 draw in the promotion games against Spårvägens GoIF managed to return to the second division. But again it was only enough for eleventh place and thus the immediate relegation was again certain.

In 1990 ESK was runner-up in Division 2 Östra and competed in the promotion games against Skövde AIK , runner-up in Division 2 Västra . With a 1-1 draw on a foreign pitch and a 1-0 home win in the second leg, the team once again made it into the second-highest Swedish league. There succeeded in the first year of relegation, in the second season, however, the team was bottom of the table and had to play in relegation games against IFK Uddevalla . After a 2-0 defeat in the first leg, a 3-2 win in the second leg was too little and ESK again only played third class. In the first two years after relegation, the club placed in the front midfield, but could not intervene in the decision to move up. In 1995, ESK just failed at IFK Västerås : with the same number of points and the same number of goals scored, four less conceded goals helped the competitor to participate in the promotion games. A year later, the team did better: after the runner-up, successes over Sandvikens IF and Visby IF Gute succeeded in being promoted to the second division again.

In the 1997 season, Enköpings SK had bad luck, the team had to suffer from a mistake by league rivals Vasalunds IF : Instead of the three non-EU foreigners allowed, the club had used four of these players in nine league games. Then these games were rated for the opponent. Before the punishment, ESK was still in the safe tenth place, but now the club has fallen back to twelfth place - a relegation place. However, the team only played one season in the third division and was able to celebrate their immediate promotion.

As a newcomer, Enköpings SK was able to place directly in the front midfield this time, while Assyriska Föreningen was only two points missing. This qualified the team for the new single-track second division, the Superettan . Here, too, ESK played in the front midfield and in 2002 the runner-up behind Östers IF and thus promotion to the Allsvenskan . There, however, the team was bottom of the table with only three wins and 14 points and in the end was 18 points behind the last non- relegation place occupied by Landskrona BoIS . As a relegated ESK, however, could not gain a foothold in the Superettan and slipped back into the third division as third from bottom. In Division 2 Norra Svealand , the team reached the promotion games as champions, but failed after a 0-0 draw at home by a 0-2 away defeat at Umeå FC . In the newly formed Division 1 Ettan , ESK made the championship the following year and returned to the second division. As twelfth in the table, relegation could be celebrated at the end of the 2007 season.

This was followed, however, by the club's sporting descent when the club had to relegate to Division 1 , the third-highest Swedish football league, in the 2008 season . There, however, the team only appeared in a single season in the " Division 1 Norra ", one of two parallel seasons, and then rose to 13th place in the final table in Sweden's fourth division .

The club's ice hockey division reached the second highest Swedish league for the first time in 1975/76, but was relegated straight away. The return came in 2006. Since the 2011/12 season, the ice hockey team has been playing in the third division Division 1 , which is now called Hockeyettan .
