Lars Jesper Blomqvist (born February 5, 1974 in Tavelsjö ) is a former Swedish football player . The midfielder was considered an extremely talented player, but was slowed down by injuries time and again in his career.

Career

Player career

Blomqvist began his career in his home country at Umeå FC and was poached by IFK Göteborg after just one season . There he made it into the UEFA Champions League and Blomqvist attracted international attention and was signed by AC Milan in 1996 . After a year it went on to AC Parma , before he was brought in 1998 by Manchester United as protection for offensive player Ryan Giggs .

His first season was a huge success when they won the Premier League and FA Cup titles . In addition, on May 26, 1999, in a sensational match in Camp Nou against FC Bayern Munich, they won the 1999 Champions League . In the following years, however, a serious knee injury hindered him, which barely allowed games for the club.

In November 2001 he was signed by Everton , whose coach Walter Smith Blomqvist wanted to use along with compatriot Niclas Alexandersson on the flank. After another injury and a change of coach, the new coach David Moyes allowed a club change and Blomqvist signed in the summer of 2002 with Charlton Athletic . Since he was rarely used there, he returned to his homeland and played for Djurgårdens IF for two years before ending his playing career in 2005.

Blomqvist played a total of 30 times for Sweden and took part in the 1994 World Cup for his country , which ended in a sensational third place.

Coaching career

In December 2006 Blomqvist took over his first coaching position at Enköpings SK . He led the second division promoted to twelfth place in the 2007 season . Due to several injury-related failures, he celebrated a comeback for the club in the second-rate Superettan in the summer of 2008 . Nevertheless, he rose with the team at the end of the season in the third division. He also played with the club against relegation in the northern season of Division 1 , so that the club wanted to sign Rolf Zetterlund in September 2009 and make him his assistant. After he rejected the proposal, the club separated from him.

In December 2009, Hammarby IF introduced Blomqvist as assistant to the new coach Michael Borgqvist . After he resigned from his post at the beginning of September 2010 due to threats from unknown persons, he moved up on an interim basis until a decision was made by the club's officials. Until the end of the season he looked after the team, with whom he clearly missed the season goal of direct promotion as eighth in the table, but he moved with her into the final of the national cup . After a 0-1 defeat against runners-up Helsingborgs IF , there was no sensation. A short time later, he announced that he did not want to extend the expiring contract.
