The CONCACAF Gold Cup 2009 was the 20th game of the continental soccer championship for North Central America and the Caribbean and 10th under the name "Gold Cup" and took place from July 3rd to 26th in the USA .

The twelve participating national teams first competed in group games and then in the knockout system . The defending champions were hosts USA , who beat Mexico 2-1 in the final of the previous tournament . In the quarter-finals on July 19, when Guadeloupe played against Costa Rica and the next game between Mexico and Haiti, a record number of spectators was set. According to official sources, 82,252 people attended the two games at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington , Texas . The two encounters are the most attended in the history of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup was won by the Mexican national soccer team after a 5-0 win over the US national team.

qualification

The qualification was organized by the three regional associations of CONCACAF :

North America (NAFU Zone)

All three NAFU associations ( Canada , USA , Mexico ) were set for the CONCACAF Gold Cup and did not have to play any qualifying matches.

Central America ( UNCAF zone)

All seven UNCAF associations took part in the 2009 UNCAF Nations Cup , which took place in Panama from January 22nd to February 1st . The first five teams were qualified for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Caribbean ( CFU zone)

Eight of the 30 associations of the CFU took part in the 2008 Caribbean Football Championship , which took place in Jamaica from December 1 to 17, 2008 . As of August 2008, 28 associations have contested a qualification (Jamaica was the host and Haiti was the defending champion). The first four teams of the Caribbean Cup were qualified for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

1 The fourth of the CFU Caribbean Cup, Cuba, withdrew from participation. Thereupon the CFU drew the Gold Cup participant between the two fifth placed, Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago.
