Sam Cronin (born December 12, 1986 in Atlanta , Georgia ) is an American football player in the midfielder position . He currently plays for Minnesota United in the top division of North American football, Major League Soccer (MLS).
Career
Youth and amateur football
Cronin began his active football career in 2001 at Mount Tabor High School in Winston-Salem , North Carolina , after moving from Atlanta with his parents and four siblings two years earlier. In high school, he had some successes with the team, such as winning the championship in 2002, but also a number of individual successes.
After leaving high school in 2004, he moved to Wake Forest University in 2005 , which also has its main campus in Winston-Salem. Cronin played for the local college team, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons . In his freshman year at the university, he was one of the first, alongside Michael Lahoud , to be on the pitch in all of the season's games. That season he made twelve shots on goal and gave three assists. He was also elected to the ACC Freshman squad . With his 25 games in his sophomore year, Cronin was the only sophomore on the team who managed to play in all of the 25 games from the start. His performance also increased compared to last year and so Cronin scored four goals in addition to four assists and 34 shots on goal. Among other things, he was elected MVP of the Demon Deacons at the end of the season . In the 2006 season, Cronin came in 26 games completed on a record of three hits and eight assists. In the College Cup of the same season he was the assist for Marcus Tracy's game- winning goal in the match against the college team of Virginia Tech . In his senior year, Cronin showed his quality again and scored ten goals in 24 championship games and prepared another four goals. In the four years at the university he came to 98 games, each of which he was on the field from the start. With this result, he set a new record in the history of Wake Forest University. In addition to Marcus Tracy and Steve Zakuani, he was one of three contenders for the Hermann Trophy , which has been awarded annually since 1967 for the best college soccer player and for the best college soccer player. He also received various awards in his senior year, such as the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award . In addition, he was elected to the First Team All-American of the NCAA .
In addition to university football, he was also at Carolina Dynamo from 2005 to 2008 in the USL Premier Development League, which is regarded as fourth-class, and scored nine goals in 39 completed games.
Club career
His professional career began on January 15, 2009, when he was drafted in the first round of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft as the 2nd pick for Toronto FC. Cronin made his professional debut on March 21, 2009 in the first round of the 2009 season in a 3-2 home win over the Kansas City Wizards ; Cronin played the full length of the game. He scored his first goal as a professional footballer on June 13, 2009 in a 2-1 away win over the New York Red Bulls when he scored the opening goal in the third minute of the game. With Toronto he won the Canadian Championship in 2009 .
On June 21, 2010 he moved to the San Jose Earthquakes for a fee.
International
On June 25, 2009, Cronin was nominated for the US national soccer team for the first time and was also appointed to the squad for the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup . In the 2-2 draw in the group game against Haiti , Cronin made his senior national team debut when he was on the field for the entire game. In the final of the tournament he came to his second use when he came on in the 80th minute for Kyle Beckerman .

Private
All three of the Cronins brothers played college soccer, with his brother McNeil playing at Furman University in Greenville , South Carolina and the other two brothers, Colin and Hugh, playing at North Carolina State University in Raleigh , North Carolina . In addition, Sam Cronin has a younger sister named Mary Grace.
