Troy Perkins (born July 29, 1981 in Springfield , Ohio ) is an American football goalkeeper .
Youth and college
Perkins attended Thomas Worthington High School in Worthington, Ohio. After graduating, he moved to the University of South Florida, where he played football on the university team . After two seasons, he went to the University of Evansville for his senior season . In Evansville he got only 21 goals in 19 games. His rate was 1.09 goals against per game. In 2002 and 2003 he also played in the USL Premier Development League for the Cape Cod Crusaders.
Club career
Upon graduation, Perkins was not selected in the MLS Draft. A short time later he received a "developmental contract" with DC United . Perkins got his chance to play for DC after two goalkeepers, Nick Rimando and Doug Warren, failed to perform well. He seized the opportunity and was on the field 16 times in his first season. Here he scored a goal rate of 1.62 goals-per-game. Despite the good performance, he shared his regular place with Nick Rimando at the end of the season.
It was not until the 2006 season that he became the team's regular goalkeeper and was on the field in almost all games. At the end of the season he was awarded the "MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Award", was in the "MLS Best XI" and was nominated for the MLS All-Star Game against Chelsea , where he played the first half was standing.
In the next season he was able to improve his average to 1.10 goals conceded per game. Nevertheless, he moved on December 20, 2007 to the Norwegian first division club Vålerenga IF . One reason for this was the signing of Zach Wells as the new goalkeeper.
With the Norwegians he guarded the gate for two years.
He returned to DC United on January 13, 2010. The transfer was complicated, as DC had to hand over the Brazilian player Fred , a transfer fee and the first pick in the MLS SuperDraft 2010 to the Philadelphia Union so that United had the rights to sign Perkins. Before that he had turned down offers from various French clubs and Feyenoord Rotterdam .
After one season he was given to the Portland Timbers for Steve Cronin and a transfer fee . At the Timbers he held the status of goalkeeper as a regular while preparing for the 2011 season. But he missed the first six league games due to a knee injury. In his first game for Portland on April 20, 2011, he was the first goalkeeper for the Timbers to not score (shutout).
During the 2012 season, Perkins moved in exchange for Donovan Ricketts to the Canadian team Montreal Impact , where he was able to prevail as a regular player. In 2012, Perkins made nine appearances for Montreal and made 33 appearances in the 2013 season . In the 2014 season he was first used as a goalkeeper for Montreal; Perkins was in goal for Impact in their first 17 games. After a goalkeeping error in the game against Sporting Kansas City , coach Frank Klopas announced that he would temporarily bet on second goalkeeper Evan Bush . Bush completed most of the remaining season games for Impact, while Perkins remained a substitute.
National team
Perkins played his first international match on January 21, 2009 against Sweden . He was also part of the squad for the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup , where he played five games.
