Steve Ralston (born June 14, 1974 in Oakville , Missouri ) is a retired American football player.

Player career

society

In 1996 he joined the newly founded Major League Soccer of Florida International University through the MLS College Draft youth development program . He was drafted by Tampa Bay Mutiny and received the MLS Rookie of the Year Award, the MLS young talent award, in the first season. Ralston played for Tampa Bay for six years and left the team after it was disbanded in 2002. He made history when he set the record for most games at the club. In total, he was 187 times on the field for the team from Florida.

In 2002 he went to New England Revolution. In his first year with the Revs, he made the most assists (19) that season. In the following seasons he was captain of the team several times.

For the 2010 season, Ralston left the Revs and moved to the new soccer franchise AC St. Louis in the USSF D2 Pro League , the second highest division in the USA. He was the first player to be signed by the new club. At the same time, he was also assistant coach under the then coach Claude Anelka. Due to financial difficulties the club had, Ralston moved back to New England Revolution in June 2010.

He injured his elbow in his first game for the Revs. In July 2010, he announced his resignation.

National team

Ralston played his first international game on January 17, 1997 against the Peruvian national soccer team .

In 2005 he completed 15 international matches in one year, but was only seen as a possible alternative for the 2006 World Cup . His last appearance for the national team was in 2007 at the CONCACAF Gold Cup .

Coaching career

After his first experience as an assistant coach at AC St. Louis, he took over the position of assistant coach at Houston Dynamo in July 2010. On January 6, 2015, he moved to the San Jose Earthquakes with coach Dominic Kinnear, where he worked as an assistant coach.

Private

Steve Ralston is married to Rachel. With her he has two daughters Anna and Clara, and a son, Liam.
