The USSF Division 2 Professional League (D2 Pro League) was a professional football league and was founded in 2010 by the USSF , the football association of the United States . It was only played for one season and replaced the USL First Division during that time . In the US and Canadian football system, the D2 Pro League took over the second level after the Major League Soccer .
history
On August 27, 2009, the US sporting goods retailer Nike announced that it was selling its stake in the United Soccer Leagues to the investment company NuRock. The company decided against an offer from Jeff Cooper, chairman of St. Louis Soccer United, and other team owners of the USL First Division. Disappointed with the sale and dissatisfied with the current situation in the league, Cooper's group decided to found a new league. This should be a reincarnation of the North American Soccer League .
A legal battle began between the USL and the new NASL . After the USSF intervened, the lawsuits were dropped.
Three of the teams that wanted to take part in the new NASL still had valid contracts with the USL. Thus, the USL First Division 2010 would have consisted of only six teams, which was not enough for a reasonable league operation. The United States Soccer Federation put together a league of twelve teams for one season for the first time: six from USL and six from NASL. The league was divided into a USL Conference and a NASL Conference. All teams play against each other.
Teams
format
With the introduction of the league, a new game method was used. The teams were divided into so-called "pods", regardless of their conference membership. This results from the distance between the individual teams.
The teams that are in the same "pod" play against each other four times, two home and two away games. Furthermore, each team plays four games against a team from a different "pod". Only two games are played against the rest. Each team has a total of 30 games.
At the end of the regular season, the play-offs will be played in a knockout system. The respective winners of the conferences automatically qualify for the play-offs. The other six teams will be drawn based on their number of points.
