Crystal Palace Baltimore is an American football club based in Baltimore , Maryland . The club was founded in 2006 and played from the 2007 season to the 2009 season in the USL Second Division , the third highest division in North American football. In the 2010 season, the team played in the NASL Conference of the USSF Division 2 Professional League . This league was established in 2010 by the United States Soccer Federation as a compromise between NASL and USL . It was only held for one season.

Crystal Palace Baltimore was part of the player development program of the English football club Crystal Palace . During the 2010 season he broke with the English mother due to financial difficulties with the English. Because of this, the team will be reorganized during the 2011 season and will not resume actual play in the North American Soccer League until 2012 .

Crystal Palace FC USA was founded on May 5, 2006 by Simon Jordan, President of Crystal Palace. Another founding member was, in addition to the officials of Crystal Palace, Jim Cherneski, who became the sports director, player-coach and manager of the new club. The founding of the club was based on an idea by Cherneski to set up a football club in his hometown.

The new franchise from Baltimore was originally supposed to compete in the USL Premier Development League . The decision was made and the team played in the USL Second Division from the 2007 season.

The first game took place on July 15, 2006 against Crystal Palace. The English club won it 3-1. For the most part, the American team included players from the surrounding universities. a. later USA international Maurice Edu .

The first season for Crystal Palace FC USA began with a series of four losses. The first game was lost 4-1 against the Charlotte Eagles . The team did not lose the next seven games, but only managed to win three. The first season ended with 5th place. This meant that the franchise could not qualify for the subsequent play-offs. After the regular playing time it was 2-2. The subsequent penalty shoot-out was won by the Baltimore team. In the semifinals, the team lost 2-1 to the Charlotte Eagles.

In the US Open Cup, the team from Baltimore survived the first round with a 2-1 win against Los Angeles Legends. In the second round they met the Harrisburg City Islanders and won 5-3 on penalties. In round 3, Crystal Palace FC USA caused a surprise. The opponents were the New York Red Bulls from Major League Soccer and they were defeated 2-0. The 2009 season began without the club's top scorer, Gary Brooks. His contract was not renewed, despite scoring the most goals for the USL-2 franchise in the past two seasons. The season ended in 6th place for Crystal Palace. So the play-offs could not be reached.

In the US Cup in 2009, as in 2007, the Eagles faced the Ocean City Barons. This meeting was also unsuccessful for Crystal Palace. The team 3: 0.

Actually, Crystal Palace Baltimore, the name change took place in January 2010, to move to the USL First Division. On November 20, 2009, the club registered interest to participate in the new edition of the North American Soccer League. After a legal dispute between representatives of NASL and USL, the American Football Association USSF installed an interim solution limited to one season. The USSF Division 2 Professional League was born and Baltimore will play in the NASL Conference for the 2010 season.

In the 2010 US Open Cup, Baltimore lost 1-0 to the Richmond Kickers in the first round .

Jim Cherneski has been a coach since 2007 and also manager of the team along with his former college teammate Pete Medd. During his active time as a soccer player, he played for various American amateur clubs. In 2002 he withdrew from active football because of his family. Years later he received a message from one of his former college coaches. This gave him the idea of ​​starting his own team in his hometown of Baltimore. While on a college tour of England, he met with representatives from Crystal Palace who were interested in building a second team anywhere in the world. This later resulted in the establishment of Crystal Palace Baltimore. Cherneski first became a player-coach, but at the end of 2009 he only concentrated on his job as a coach.

He also works as a scout for Crystal Palace to monitor the North American player market.

Crystal Palace has played Baltimore at UMBC Stadium in Catonsville, which is part of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County , since 2008 . The stadium has 4,500 seats and is also home to the UMBC Retrievers lacrosse team.
