The Fort Lauderdale Strikers , formerly Miami FC , were a franchise in various professional football - leagues from Fort Lauderdale , Florida . From 2006 to 2009 the franchise was part of the then second-rate USL First Division . After a season in the USSF Division 2 Professional League , the franchise played under its new name in the newly formed North American Soccer League from the 2011 season .

Miami FC
The franchise was founded in 2006 and played their first game on April 16, 2006 against the Jamaican champions Portmore United , which Miami won 1-0. The goal was scored by Mario Rafael Rodríguez and the template was provided by former Brazilian international Zinho . The club had previously committed the Brazilian striker Romário , who after a short time moved to the Australian first division club Adelaide United .
Miami FC began playing in the 2006 USL 1 season. This ended with fifth place in the regular season . In the subsequent quarter-finals of the play-offs , the team lost to the Vancouver Whitecaps . In the following three years Miami could no longer qualify for the play-offs.
In November 2009, the team announced that they no longer wanted to play in any of the United Soccer Leagues . Miami co-founded the North American Soccer League , which should start operating in 2010. Due to a dispute between the USL and the new NASL, the USSF Division 2 Professional League was brought into being for the 2010 season . There the team played in the NASL Conference, but only finished fourth and thus missed qualifying for the play-offs.
Fort Lauderdale Strikers
In the summer of 2010, Miami FC announced that they would use the addition Strikers in the team name from 2011 to honor the former NASL team Fort Lauderdale Strikers. On February 17, 2011, the franchise was renamed Fort Lauderdale Strikers.
On September 19, 2014 the Brazilian entrepreneurs Paulo Cesso, Ricardo Geromel and Rafael Bertani took over the rights to the franchise. In December 2014, former Brazilian soccer player Ronaldo also became a co-owner of the Strikers.
Due to financial problems, the franchise did not participate in the 2017 season. The NASL again stopped their game operations after the 2017 season.

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers have played their home games at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale since 2009. The stadium, which opened in 1959, has a capacity of 20,450. It was originally built as an athletics field for the local high schools. It's part of a sports complex that includes Fort Lauderdale Stadium, which the New York Yankees had used as a pre-season training ground for over 40 years. Lockhart Stadium is owned by Broward County's School District .
In addition to the Strikers, the Florida Atlantic University football team also uses the stadium.
