The Portland Timbers are a franchise of professional football - League Major League Soccer (MLS) from Portland , Oregon ( USA ). The Timbers were founded in 2001 and played in various leagues in the USA. Most recently the team played in the USSF Division 2 Professional League .
On March 20, 2009, Major League Soccer announced that Portland is getting an expansion team for the MLS and that they will start playing in 2011. The name Portland Timbers will be continued.
The franchise has been playing in Major League Soccer , the top division of North American soccer , since the 2011 season . The Portland Timbers won the 2015 MLS season .
history
Times before the MLS
This franchise is now the third in US soccer history to come from Portland. Today's club took its name from the former NASL team, which played from 1975 to 1982.
In 1989 and 1990 another team played under this name in the Western Soccer League.
The Portland Timbers were founded in 2001. The club was a member of the A-League, from which the USL First Division emerged in 2005 . Even if things didn't go so well in terms of sport in the first few years, the club always had a relatively high average attendance. In 2004 the Timbers won the Western Conference, but had to admit defeat to arch-rivals Seattle Sounders in the first playoff round . A year later the quarterfinals were the final destination. The Timbers finished the 2006 season as penultimate.
In the following seasons, the Oregon club reached the semi-finals of the play-offs in 2007, which also succeeded in 2009. This year the team was also able to win the regular season.
In 2010 the team played in the USSF D2 Pro League . The regular season ended with 3rd place in the USL Conference.
The way to the MLS
For over two years, Merritt Paulson, majority owner of Shortstop, LLC, tried to place a team in the MLS. In May 2007 he and a group of investors bought the Portland Beavers minor league baseball team and the Portland Timbers United Soccer Leagues team. This group included the former United States Treasury Secretary , Henry Paulson . Paulson is Merritt's father and owned 20% of his son's company.
In October 2007, Merritt Paulson announced that PGE Park could be expanded for $ 20 million while building a ballpark for 8,000 to 9,000 seats. A year later, he gave an interview to the New York Times asking Portland taxpayers to donate $ 85 million for its stadiums. In return, he agreed to raise $ 40 million to set up a Major League Soccer franchise in Portland.
For then-mayor of the City of Portland, Sam Adams , and the city council, possible support for Paulson's endeavors raised a lot of questions, even though Paulson could raise $ 12.5 million for the new stadium. In order to justify the necessary expenditure of 88.8 million US dollars, the city assumed that Paulson's diagnoses were correct. Namely, he said that baseball ticket revenue will be 95% higher in 2011 than in 2008. For example, the city cut budgets for street maintenance and cleaning and cut spending on streetlights.
founding
On May 20, 2009, Portland received the license to play as the 18th team in Major League Soccer. This agreement also included that the franchise would be called Portland Timbers.
The team is owned by Peregrine, LLC, where Merritt Paulson is Chairman. With his other company, Shortstop LLC, he owns the Portland Beavers, who play in the baseball minor league Pacific Coast League, and the Portland Timbers, who competed in the USSF D2 Pro League until late 2010.
Preparation for the first season
On August 10, 2010, the former Scottish international John Spencer was introduced as the first coach of the MLS franchise. In addition, Gavin Wilkinson took over the position of technical director, which he also held with the USL team.
The Timbers signed five players before the MLS Expansion Draft, which took place on November 24, 2010. Steve Cronin, Bright Dike and Ryan Pore were taken over by the previous USL team. Another player came from Austin Aztex and another from the New York Red Bulls . In the expansion draft, the team selected ten more players from other franchises. On the same day, Dax McCarty was swapped for Rodney Wallace from DC United.
The Timbers' first game took place on February 4, 2011 against the PDL team County Fusion Ventura. The game ended 1-1. The next game against Los Angeles Galaxy was only a draw. Only against Montreal Impact could a victory be achieved. While preparing for season one, the Timbers scored two wins from eight games.
First season 2011
The first game in Major League Soccer was lost 3-1. Opponents were the Colorado Rapids on March 19, 2011. The only goal, and thus the first MLS goal in the history of the franchise, was scored by Kenny Cooper . The team celebrated their first victory on matchday four. The home game, which took place on April 14th against Chicago Fire, won the Timbers 4-2. In qualifying for the US Open Cup, the team lost on May 3, 2011 in the semi-finals against the San Jose Earthquakes . At the end of the first season, the team reached sixth place in the Western Conference and could not qualify for the play-offs. The most successful goalscorer was Jack Jewsbury with eight goals this season.
2012-2014
After a weaker season in 2012, the team took first place in the Western Conference in the 2013 season. So you could also qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League 2014/15 . In the play-offs, the Timbers made it to the Conference Final.
At the first Champions League appearance, due to a poorer goal difference, they only reached second place in the group stage and were eliminated.
MLS Cup 2015
In the 2015 season, the team reached a 3rd place in the Western Conference in the regular season and thus qualified for the play-offs. In the Knockout Round, they won a penalty shoot-out against Sporting Kansas City . In the subsequent conference semifinals, the Vancouver Whitecaps were beaten in two games. The Conference Final was won against FC Dallas . With the win, the franchise moved into the final of the play-offs, the MLS Cup, for the first time. The Columbus crew was the final opponent here. After early goals from Diego Valeri and Rodney Wallace, the team won the play-offs over 90 minutes and thus the first championship title in Major League Soccer.
Colors and coats of arms
The logo of the MLS franchise Portland Timbers takes many elements from the logo of the USL team. The circular shape of the coat of arms represents unity, wholeness and the pursuit of perfection. The ax symbol in the center of the coat of arms goes back to the lumber industry, which is widespread in the Pacific Northwest . The three lines in light green that come off the ax go back to the Timbers belonging to the three leagues North American Soccer League , United Soccer Leagues and Major League Soccer. The team colors are yellow-pine- green and moss- green, which symbolize the forests of Oregon.
Alaska Airlines was confirmed as a shirt sponsor in September 2010 . On December 9, 2010, the jerseys were unveiled to the public at Portland International Airport . The home jersey consists of half of the two shades of green, which are also the team's colors. The away shirt is completely red, which is based on Portland's nickname, Rose city.

After renovations, the stadium now has a capacity of 19,566 seats. The Providence Park was opened in 1926 as Multnomah Stadium. In 2001 it was renovated for the first time. From then on it was called PGE Park. A second time up to the start of the season of the Major League Soccer 2011 franchise. It offers 20,438 spectators. The stadium has had its current name since 2014.
The stadium is owned by the City of Portland and is managed by Peregrine Sports, LLC. Providence Health & Services holds the naming rights. In addition to the Timbers, the Portland State Vikings also play their American football games there.
Club culture
Fan groups
The largest fan group is the Timbers Army. They are generally regarded as a loud and enthusiastic group, which make this clear at home games. The Timbers were founded in 2001 under the name Cascade Rangers, which refers to the Cascade Range . The name Timbers Army was adopted in 2002.
Rivalries
Due to the regional proximity to Seattle Sounders FC , there has been a long local rivalry between the two teams. Portland, Seattle and the Vancouver Whitecaps have played the Cascadia Cup since 2004. The team that is most successful during a season will receive the trophy at the end. With the inclusion of all three clubs in the MLS, this rivalry will continue there from 2011.
The Timbers will also compete in the Heritage Cup. This trophy was held between the teams that were already represented in the NASL, at least by name.
mascot
The mascot of the Timbers was until April 2008, a woodcutter named "Timber Jim", which has now been replaced by "Timber Joey". Every time the Timbers score, the lumberjack gets a chainsaw and cuts off a piece of a tree. The team's mascot was initially portrayed by fan Jim Serrill. In January 2008, Serrill announced his resignation. His successor, Timber Joey, was unveiled as the official successor in a friendly against Juventus Primavera on June 14, 2008. This one is played by Joe Webber.
The mascot shapes the club's home games like no other in the USA. Every time Portland scores a goal, Timber Joey saws a piece of the tree and presents it to the audience to great cheers. After the game, he hands the sawn off piece of wood to the respective goal scorer.

In 2010, ten Timbers games were broadcast on regional television station FSN Northwest. For the coming season, the nationwide Fox Soccer Channel will also broadcast some games.
All games are broadcast on the radio via the Oregon radio stations 95.5-FM "The Game" and NewsRadio 750 KXL. In addition, 95.5-FM "The Game" broadcasts the "Talk Timbers" show every week, which broadcasts reports and interviews in the Portland Timbers area.

Portland Timbers 2 is an American soccer franchise of the United Soccer League based in Portland , Oregon . They make up the reserve team for the Portland Timbers.
history
founding
On October 14, 2014, the Portland Timbers announced that they would be franchising the United Soccer League . This will take place from the 2015 season and will be trained by Jay Vidovich. It replaces the team that previously competed in the MLS Reserve Division. The home games are played at Merlo Field in Portland.
First season
In the first season, the team reached 8th place in the Western Conference and could not qualify for the subsequent play-offs. At the end of the season, the previous coach, Jay Vidovich, moved to the University of Pittsburgh.
Stadion
The home games are played at Merlo Field in Portland. The stadium is located on the grounds of the University of Portland and also serves as a venue for the university teams, Portland Pilots. The soccer field, built in 1990, has a capacity of 4,892 spectators.

Youth and development
Portland Timbers U23s (USL PDL)
The Portland Timbers U23s have been playing in the USL Premier Development League since the 2009 season . At that time, the team was still part of the United Soccer Leagues franchise of the Portland Timbers. After the Portland Timbers re-founded for Major League Soccer, the U23s also migrated into the organization. Merritt Paulson is also the owner.
In the 2010 season, the team won the Northwest Division in the Western Conference. In the play-offs, the team made it to the finals, beating Thunder Bay Chill from Ontario , Canada 4-1. This was the team's greatest success so far.
Timbers Academy
The Timbers Academy is the franchise's youth program. The age groups U-16 and U-18 are represented here. The Academy is run in collaboration with the Oregon Youth Soccer Association. The age groups U-12 to U-15 can also be found here.
