William "Will" Johnson (born January 21, 1987 in Toronto ) is a Canadian football player . The Canadian international is mostly used on the right offensive side and has been without a club since the beginning of 2020. His grandfather Brian Birch was an English professional footballer and coach.

Club career

Johnson was born in Canada, but when he was a toddler he moved with his family to Merseyside, England . At the age of ten, the family relocated to the Chicago area. Therefore, in addition to Canadian citizenship, Johnson also has British and US passports. He stayed in Chicago until he was 17, before returning to England to play in the Blackburn Rovers youth academy .

In 2005 he signed his first professional contract with the American team Chicago Fire and came to six appearances in Major League Soccer (MLS). In March 2006, about a month before the start of the season, he was released from his contract by Chicago Fire after he refused to sign a new contract (a relatively poorly funded developmental contract ). Johnson completed a trial training session at the Dutch first division club SC Heerenveen and received a three-year contract from the club.

After his first season, in which he came to 14 missions, he was awarded the 2007/08 season to the first division promoted De Graafschap and was able to realize relegation with the club. After his return he played no role in the plans of the new coach Trond Sollied and was released from his contract. He then returned to the MLS, in the Chicago Fire still held the league transfer rights. He moved to Real Salt Lake for the 4th round pick at the 2009 MLS SuperDraft and the 2nd round pick at the 2011 MLS SuperDraft . In the last games of the 2008 season he came to a total of nine league appearances and scored two goals. His goal against FC Dallas , when he briefly lifted a cross pass at the edge of the penalty area and volleyed into the goal, was voted Goal of the Year by the fans . In 2009 he won the MLS championship with Real Salt Lake. After a total of five seasons, he moved to the Portland Timbers in 2013 .

National team

Johnson was a regular in Canada's U-20 squad between 2004 and 2007 . In 2005 and 2007 he took part in the Junior World Championship with the team .

In 2005 he was called up to the squad of the Canadian senior team without a previous international match for the CONCACAF Gold Cup , but was not used during the tournament. He made his international debut in a friendly against Luxembourg in November 2005, and has played sporadically since then.

With the Canadian Olympic team (U-23) he played in the qualifying tournament for the Olympic soccer tournament in China in 2008 . He failed with the team in the decisive semi-final game 3-0 to the USA. During the tournament he scored three goals and was the second top scorer behind Freddy Adu , he was also elected to the team of the tournament. In 2009 he was a regular in the Canadian line-up at the CONCACAF Gold Cup .
