John Spencer (born September 11, 1970 in Glasgow ) is a former Scottish soccer player who last played in Major League Soccer for the Colorado Rapids . He is currently an assistant at Houston Dynamo .

Spencer's football career began with the Glasgow Rangers , where he signed his first contract in 1985. He was later loaned to Greenock Morton and Lai Sun ( Hong Kong ) and was also under contract with Chelsea FC , Queens Park Rangers , Everton FC and Motherwell FC .

On February 21, 2001 he signed with the Rapids and made a strong start in the Major Soccer League. In his first year with the Rapids, Spencer scored 14 goals in 22 games and prepared seven. As a result, he was voted into the "Eleven of the Season" of the MLS. Spencer's second year in America was less outstanding and mainly characterized by injuries, but he was still able to score five goals and provide four assists in 13 games. In 2003 he found his way back on the road to success, scored 14 goals and prepared 5, was also named "Eleven of the Year" and was nominated for the MLS MVP Award . In 2004 his age made itself felt, he missed several games due to injuries and was not as dangerous as in previous years even when he could play. In 19 games he was able to score four goals and provide one assist. After this season he ended his active career.

International

In the Scottish national team he had 14 appearances.

As a trainer

From 2011 he was the trainer of the new MLS franchise Portland Timbers and held the office until July 9, 2012.
