Gavin Wilkinson (born November 5, 1973 in Auckland ) is a former New Zealand soccer player and since January 2010 technical director of the US first division club Portland Timbers , whose interim coach he was also at short notice in 2012.

Career

Wilkinson played at the beginning of his career, among other things, from 1992 to 1996 for Waitakere City and then moved to Perth Glory in Australia in 1996 , where he played 68 times until 1999 and scored four goals. He then moved to Instant-Dict in Hong Kong for a year , and in 2000 he went to Geylang United in Singapore . In the summer of 2001 Wilkinson signed a contract with the Irish club Kilkenny City , in 2002 he moved to the United States for the Portland Timbers in the USL First Division and played there for five years, where he completed 124 games and scored four goals.

With the New Zealand national team , Wilkinson won the 1998 OFC Nations Cup in the final against Australia . He also took part in the 2003 Confederations Cup with New Zealand . He played a total of 38 times for his country and scored one goal.

On September 26, 2006, Wilkinson took over from the 2007 game year as a coach at the Portland Timbers , where he previously acted as an assistant coach between 2005 and 2006. Subsequently, he was hired as head coach until the franchise was dissolved in 2010 and then moved to the staff of the new major league soccer franchise Portland Timbers at the beginning of 2010 , where he has since been employed as technical director. In 2012 he briefly took over the coaching position of the North American first division club.
