The Kilkenny City Association Football Club was established in 1966 football club from the Irish town of Kilkenny . The club was known as EMFA until the late 1980s and has played under that name in the League of Ireland since 1985 . In early 2008, the club withdrew from the league due to financial difficulties.

In 1966, the club was founded by the merger of two small football teams, each named after the place where they played; one Emmet Street , the other Fatima Avenue . The club created by the merger was called Emmet street and Fatima Avenue Football Club for short EMFA . Under this name, the club was included in the reform of the League of Ireland in 1985 in the newly created First Division , the lower season, where the club remained with the exception of the 1997/98 and 2000/01 seasons, the only times of the first class.

The only successes the club could achieve in this lower division: 1987, still as EMFA , won the First Division Shield Cup, a cup competition for the teams of the First Division and 1997/98, after the 1989 renaming in Kilkenny City, became the club champion of the First Division .
