Diego Valeri

Diego Valeri (born January 25, 1887 in Piove di Sacco , † November 27, 1976 in Rome ) was an Italian literary scholar and writer.

Life

He first began his academic training in Padua , and in 1912 won a competition to study at the Sorbonne in Paris . In 1914 Valeri returned to Italy, initially worked as a teacher in various cities in Upper Italy, but got into difficulties because of his anti-fascist attitude and finally took a subordinate position in the superintendent for art in Venice. On the side, he regularly wrote columns on French literature in the magazine Nuova Antologia , published translations and poems. In 1939 he became professor of French language and literature at the University of Padua, later professor of history of Italian literature. After Mussolini's arrest in 1943, Valeri became editor of the Venetian daily Il Gazzettino . On September 8, 1943, he had to emigrate to Switzerland. He worked there as a journalist and translator. Together with other anti-fascists he organized a kind of Italian university in exile in Mürren . Returned to Italy in 1945, he resumed teaching in Padua and also worked as a private lecturer at the University of Lecce . In 1957 he became a corresponding member of the Accademia dei Lincei and in 1962 Socio nazionale of the same academy. Finally he was appointed superintendent for the arts of Venice, moved to Venice and was also elected to the city parliament.

In addition to works on the history of literature, Valeri mainly published poetry . His literary work is influenced by Gabriele D'Annunzio , Giovanni Pascoli , Paul Verlaine and symbolism . His few prose works deal with life in Venice . His most important works are Il campanellino (1928) and Fantasie veneziane (1934). In Italy he is also known as a translator of German-language - including Goethe - and French literature. Many of his poetry volumes have been translated into French. On April 6, 1965 he became a member of the French Legion of Honor .
