Giovanni Pascoli
Giovanni Placido Agostino Pascoli (born December 31, 1855 in San Mauro di Romagna , Emilia-Romagna , † April 6, 1912 in Bologna ) was an Italian poet .
Life
After a childhood marked by blows of fate, Pascoli became involved as a student for radical political ideas, which in 1879 brought him temporarily to prison. After that, however, he turned mainly to literature. In 1905 Pascoli became professor of Italian literature in Bologna. He achieved international fame for his poetry, which mainly dealt with patriotic and historical subjects. His work was of particular importance for the development of the modern Italian language, which in Pascoli's time was still fragmented into numerous dialects. Many words of dialect origin were used by Pascoli for the first time in poetry - this was the greatest revolution in Italian literary language since the Middle Ages.
The most important work is the collection of poems "Myricae", the title of which goes back to a verse by Virgil : "[...] arbusta iuvant humilesque myricae" (4th Ecl., V.299)
