Sam Adams (* 3. September 1963 in Whitehall , Jefferson County , Montana ) is an American politician of the Democrats and former mayor of Portland in the state of Oregon .

Life

Adams was born in Montana in 1963 to Karalie and Larry Adams, a special education teacher and high school basketball coach. When Adams was two years old, his family moved to Richland , Washington, for a year , then on to Newport, and finally to Eugene , Oregon. His parents divorced there. Adams grew up with his mother. He graduated from South Eugene High School and then attended the University of Oregon . Adams was Mayor of Portland from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2012 . Adams is openly gay . His partner is the journalist Peter Zuckerman.

Sam Adams is currently accused of telling the untruth about an affair with a 17-year-old employee during the election campaign. Based on these allegations, there were two unsuccessful attempts to initiate recall proceedings against him.

Sam Adams made a guest appearance on the comedy series Portlandia in 2011 , where he played the assistant to the mayor of Portland (season 1, episodes 2 and 4).
