Charleston Battery is an American football franchise the USL Championship from Charleston , South Carolina . The team was founded in 1993 and has since played in various leagues of the United Soccer Leagues .
Charleston is one of the most successful teams in the lower US professional leagues. They won the USL A-League in 2003, the USL Second Division in 2010 and the USL Professional Division in 2012 .
The team's home games have been played at the MUSC Health Stadium since 1999 . This is on Daniel Island in Charleston.
history
The club was founded in 1993 and played in the Premier Development Soccer League for the first few years. In 1996 the Battery became champions of this league. In the following season, the club joined the USL First Division, then known as the A-League . In 1999 the club reached the semi-finals of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup , the US cup competition. In 2004 the battery was able to repeat this. In the 2003 season, Charleston was able to win the championship of the A-League by a 3-0 final victory over Minnesota Thunder .
In 2008 Charleston Battery reached the final of the US Open Cup for the first time, but had to admit defeat to DC United.
In 2010 the team won both the regular season and the play-offs in the USL Second Division.
Since the 2011 season they have been playing in the newly formed USL Professional Division. There they secured victory in the play-offs in 2012.
In the 2014 season, Charleston Battery served the Vancouver Whitecaps from Major League Soccer as a farm team . In the 2015 season, Houston Dynamo replaced the Whitecaps as an MLS partner. For the 2016 season, they partnered with Atlanta United , which joined the MLS in 2017. During the season United players came to Charleston Battery for use, which the franchise had already signed. The partnership was extended by one year for the 2017 season.
Colors and coats of arms
The colors of the Charleston Battery are yellow, black, and red. There are two crossed artillery cannons on the team's coat of arms. These go back to the role of the city in the American Civil War .
Stadion
The MUSC Health Stadium , completed in 1999, is the home stadium of Battery. It is located on the 16 km² Daniel Island peninsula, which lies between the Cooper River and the Wando River. The football stadium is owned by the city of Charleston, but it is maintained by the club itself. Battery Park, as it is nicknamed, has a capacity of 5,100 spectators.
Rivals and fans
The club has an unusual rivalry with the major league soccer club DC United . Whenever both clubs meet, the clubs play for the "Coffee Pot Cup". This competition was created by the fans of both clubs.
The Battery’s official fan club is called "The Regiment".
