The Tampa Bay Rowdies are an American football - Franchise of the USL Championship in Saint Petersburg , Florida .
The franchise was founded in 2008 and began playing in the North American Soccer League in 2010 . The team colors are green and yellow.
history
On June 18, 2008 the businessmen David Laxer, Andrew Nestor and Hinds Howard announced that they would like to found a soccer team, which will start under the name FC Tampa Bay Rowdies in the USL First Division from the 2010 season. In November 2009, Tampa Bay FC announced that they would play in the new North American Soccer League from the 2010 season. Due to a dispute between the NASL and the USL , the provisional USSF Division 2 Professional League was introduced for one year .
In January 2010, the franchise changed its name from Tampa Bay Rowdies to Tampa Bay FC. This resulted from a legal battle over the use of the name Tampa Bay Rowdies in merchandising products. This was reversed on December 15, 2011. Since then, the team has been called Tampa Bay Rowdies again.
2010 season
On April 16, 2010, Tampa Bay FC played its first league game. Opponent was Crystal Palace Baltimore , who could be defeated 1-0. The first league goal in the team's history was achieved by Aaron King. The club started the season very well and won five of the first ten games. In the end it was not enough to qualify for the play-offs. The only success was winning the Ponce De Leon Cup 2010, which is held by teams from Florida and Puerto Rico who play in a league. The league games that the teams play against each other count here.
On September 23, 2010, the previous coach Paul Dalglish was dismissed. The reason for this was not reaching the play-offs. The previous technical director Perry Van der Beck initially took over the coaching role as an interim solution.
In the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, Tampa Bay was eliminated in the second round against Miami FC 2-1 after extra time. In the first round the team was able to win 3-0 against the USASA club Legends FC.
First NASL season 2011
Tampa has played in the North American Soccer League, the second highest in the US soccer league system, since the 2011 season. Before the start of the season, a new coach was signed with the Englishman Ricky Hill . The former international took over from interim coach Perry Van der Beck. The Tampa Bay Rowdies finished the first NASL season as the third of the regular season. This enabled the team to qualify for the first round of the play-offs. There, however, you could not prevail against the later play-offs winners Minnesota Stars FC .
2012 season
In the regular season, the Tampa Bay Rowdies took 2nd place and thus qualified for the playoffs. There they succeeded for the first time to get the NASL title.
2013 season
For the 2013 season, a second star was added to the logo as a symbol for the second title after 1975. The season was the first to be divided into a spring and autumn season. The rowdies reached fourth place in the spring season. In the fall season, the team finished third. The play-offs were reduced to the final game of the first of the season. So you couldn't qualify for the play-offs.
Change to the USL
In late October 2016, it was announced that the Tampa Bay Rowdies franchise is moving from NASL to the United Soccer League.
