Athletic career

Player career

Youth and career start (until 2003)

Cole moved to north London to Camden Town at the age of seven . With his brother Jarrod Cole, who later became a successful rugby player should be, he visited in Marylebone , the St Mary's Primary School in Camden school Haverstock Hill and later the St. Aloysius RC College . The family was most recently at home in Romford .

The still young Joe Cole already gained national fame in football as a student, as he came from the renowned youth academy of West Ham United and was considered one of the greatest talents in English football. This led top club Manchester United to make an offer of £ 10 million for the then only 16-year-old teenager . Cole, whose style of play is reminiscent of the English crowd favorite Paul Gascoigne , quickly made his way up to the club's professional team and made his debut there at the age of 17. In addition, he won the FA Youth Cup with the youth team in 1999, defeating Coventry City in the final . He quickly became a crowd favorite and eventually became the team's captain at a young age. At the end of the 2002/03 season, however, Cole rose with West Ham in the second division, although the club with 42 points could have the highest yield of all Premier League relegated teams since the league consisted of 20 participants.

Chelsea FC (2003-2010)

Cole moved to Chelsea in 2003 for a fee of £ 6.6 million and was part of the first major shopping offensive by oil billionaire Roman Abramowitsch , who had recently secured ownership of the club. There he found himself in the middle of a squad, in which there was great competition between the top-class players, and so he often found himself on the substitute bench in the following. According to Cole, coach Claudio Ranieri even intended to loan him to the Russian club CSKA Moscow a few days after the commitment . Cole, however, did not agree to this loan deal, and after it had been used sporadically in the first half of the season, the signing of Scott Parker in January 2004 meant that Cole's chances of a regular place worsened again significantly. Although Cole has strengths in technical skills and creative play, he had a reputation at this point of being of little team support. When José Mourinho, a new coach, joined Chelsea in 2004 , Cole's situation changed little at first, until the number of his appearances suddenly increased.

In January 2005, Mourinho publicly criticized him for neglecting his defensive duties despite his winning goal against Liverpool , describing him as a player "with two faces". Shortly after his goal, Mourinho Cole had replaced what the coach justified with the fact that "the team would have acted afterwards only with ten men, since Cole would have stopped running and playing". Coles responded positively to this criticism and subsequently became a key player in the team that won the English championship in the 2004/05 season. He had also benefited from injuries to some teammates, especially Arjen Robben . This enabled him to break into the starting line-up on the left side of midfield in the English national team, which had been an Achilles heel for several years. Even as a goal scorer, Cole now liked and in the end ten goals of the season were recorded.

Nevertheless, Cole had to fight for the regular place in the team in the 2005/06 season, as in addition to the return of Arjen Robben and the new signing of Shaun Wright-Phillips increased the pressure on his position. Due to good performances, however, Cole was able to assert himself in the internal hierarchy of the team, was usually preferred over his competitors Wright-Phillips and Damien Duff and was finally chosen by his Premier League colleagues in the "Team of the Year". His style of play also earned him great recognition from many football experts, who saw in him the greatest creative element in the game of Chelsea FC. Therefore, the criticism of Mourinho turned out to be all the greater when he did without Cole in the FA Cup semi-final match against Liverpool FC in the starting eleven for tactical reasons and the 1: 2 defeat was largely attributed to this circumstance. Notwithstanding this, Cole extended his contract term at Chelsea for four more years during this season.

Due to a knee injury that Cole sustained on August 5, 2006 while preparing for the season of his club in America, he had to take a break in the first three months of the 2006/07 season and also missed the first four qualifying games for the 2008 European Championship . He celebrated his comeback on October 14, 2006 when he came on as a substitute in the 1-0 win for Chelsea FC against Reading FC in the second half. In January 2007, Cole had to undergo an operation due to a hairline crack in his foot, which he had already sustained on November 26, 2006 in the league game against Manchester United . He returned on April 4, 2007 for the quarter-final first leg in the Champions League against Valencia CF. There he had not yet fully recovered, but played a major role in the fact that his team reached the semifinals after the 1-1 draw, especially in the 2-1 away win in Valencia - the decisive goal came in stoppage time . In this semifinal, he scored the only goal to win the 1-0 win in the first leg against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge , but that should not be enough, as Liverpool initially equalized the match in the second leg with the same result and then ensured the final on penalties .

After a successful but untitled 2007/08 season, Cole was initially an important part of the offensive in the 2008/09 season, which completed a record of eleven victorious away games, and formed a well-rehearsed duo with the Portuguese José Bosingwa especially on the right . On January 14, 2009, a cruciate ligament rupture caused his season to end prematurely, and so he also missed his team's FA Cup final success. He celebrated his comeback on October 17, 2009, and in the role of supplementary player - only 14 of his 26 league appearances were from the start - he won the double of the English championship and FA Cup at the end of the 2009/10 season . In the cup final he was substituted on for Salomon Kalou just under 20 minutes before the end . On June 9, it was announced that Cole would be leaving Chelsea for the 2010/11 season. His expiring contract was not extended.

Liverpool FC (2010-2013)

For the 2010/11 season, Liverpool signed Joe Cole for four years. In August 2011, Cole was loaned to Lille OSC for one season .

West Ham United (2013-2014)

On January 4, 2013, the "Hammers" signed Cole with a contract term of 18 months. Cole left the club after the end of the 2013-14 season .

Aston Villa (2014-2016)

For the 2014/15 season , Cole moved to Aston Villa ; he signed a contract valid until June 30, 2016. On October 19, 2015 he was loaned to Coventry City for six weeks in Football League One .

Coventry City (2016)

On January 7, 2016, Coventry City signed Cole on a free transfer until the end of the 2015/16 season.

Career finale in the USA (2016-2018)

In May 2016, Cole moved to the United States for the NASL franchise Tampa Bay Rowdies . He completed three seasons with the team and scored 20 goals. After the 2018 season ended , Cole announced the end of his active career.

English national team

As a national player, Cole had hardly any notable successes until the 2006 World Cup . Although he was part of the English squad at the 2002 World Cup , he only came on as a substitute in the first round match against Sweden . Even after another Euro 2004 in Portugal on the bench, Coles' role as England's left midfielder was questioned and instead flirted with the "left-footed" Stewart Downing or even the fast-paced young talent Theo Walcott . However, Cole completed his international games consistently in 2005 and the first half of 2006, including against Denmark , Northern Ireland and Argentina , and thereby established himself more and more in the selection of England.

Especially with good performances in England's friendlies shortly before the start of the World Cup finals in Germany, Cole drew attention to himself; this was expressed in his nomination in May 2006 - instead of his teammate Wright-Phillips - from. Already in the first group game against Paraguay he played in the left midfield and then scored the opening goal against Sweden in the last group game on June 20, 2006 with one of the most beautiful World Cup goals , which ultimately even made him the best player of the game (“Man of the Match ”). After the World Cup, he played again for the first time in the 1-1 friendly game against the Netherlands on November 15, 2006 and returned to the game against Brazil in the new Wembley Stadium on June 1, 2007 after his intermittent injury . Cole, who has meanwhile moved up into the regular formation, played eight more games in 2008, but ended up with a 2: 3 home defeat against Croatia and the resulting missed European Championship qualification under coach Steve McClaren .

After changing coach to Fabio Capello , Cole was still in the extended senior national team squad and on September 6, 2008 he scored both goals to 2-0 against Andorra in World Cup qualification. Four days later he successfully took revenge in a 4-1 win against Croatia, but after his cruciate ligament rupture in January 2009, he waited until May 30, 2010 for his next international match. Two days later, coach Capello nominated him for the final 23-man squad for the upcoming 2010 World Cup in South Africa .

Career as a coach

Following the end of his career as a player, he returned to England, where he will work for his former club, Chelsea, as a technical coach in the club's youth division.

Cole is an athlete ambassador for the development aid organization Right to Play . When playing, he wore contact lenses due to poor eyesight .
