Jacob Christopher "Jake" Gleeson (born June 26, 1990 in Palmerston North ) is a New Zealand soccer player . The goalkeeper has been playing in Major League Soccer for the Portland Timbers since 2011 .

Career

Gleeson was part of the New Zealand squad in 2007 when they won the U-17 Soccer Oceania Championship and also played two games in the 2007 U-17 World Cup in South Korea. He caught the eye of an English talent scout in the 7-0 defeat against Brazil, who gave Gleeson trial training at Manchester United and Everton FC . Unlike his national team colleagues Chris Wood (West Bromwich Albion) and Lance Heslop (Aston Villa), Gleeson was not able to move to England. After winning the Central Premier League championship with Western Suburbs in 2007 , his career stalled in the years that followed. From 2008 to 2010, the young goalkeeper only played sporadically for Team Wellington in the New Zealand Football Championship , the country's top division. At the end of 2008, the goalkeeper took part in the U-20 Oceania Cup with the New Zealand U-20 team, but only achieved third place with his team behind Tahiti and New Caledonia and therefore also missed the qualification for the 2009 Junior World Cup .

In the spring of 2010, Gavin Wilkinson , coach at the US professional club Portland Timbers and former New Zealand national player, learned of the Seattle Sounders' interest in the goalkeeping talent. Gleeson then received an offer from the Timbers to play in 2010 for the second team, the Portland Timbers U23's , in the USL PDL and to move up to the newly formed team in Major League Soccer for the following season . Gleeson accepted the offer and dominated the league with the U-23 team. The team won all 16 regular season games and remained undefeated in the championship play-offs. With a 4-1 win in the final, the Timbers became the first team in league history to win all of the season's games.

In February 2011 he and U-23 teammate Freddie Braun received a professional contract for the MLS team. Gleeson's development did not go unnoticed by New Zealand national coach Ricki Herbert , who nominated the goalkeeper for a friendly against China in March 2011 for the New Zealand senior team . At the Timbers, Gleeson was scheduled as the third goalkeeper at the start of the season, but at the start of the season he was on the bench due to an injury to Troy Perkins and therefore canceled his international participation. He finally made his league debut on Matchday 2 against Toronto FC after Perkins substitute Adin Brown had to be replaced injured at half-time. Gleeson stayed in the starting line-up on the following game days and played, among other things, the first home game in the club's MLS history, a 4-2 win on April 14, 2011 against Chicago Fire .

Although Gleeson received the "Save of the Week" award for outstanding parades in the games against Toronto and FC Dallas , he had to give Perkins the option after his recovery.

On June 5, 2011, he made his debut in the New Zealand national soccer team in a friendly against Australia when he replaced Glen Moss in the 3-0 defeat for the last 13 minutes .
