The Austin Aztex is a former American football team from Austin , Texas .

The Aztex were founded in 2008 and played in the 2009 season in the USL First Division , the second highest division in North American football.

In the 2010 season, the team played in the USL Conference of the USSF Division 2 Professional League . At the end of the season, the entire franchise organization moved to Orlando , Florida . There they compete under the name Orlando City and play in the USL Professional Division .

history

The club was owned by businessman Phil Rawlins. Rawlins is originally from England and is on the board of directors of the English football club Stoke City .

There was a partnership between the Aztexs and Stoke City from the start. This included exchanging training information and players. The English used the club as a training facility and hoped to discover new American talents.

The club appointed Adrian Heath , a former Everton player , to coach. He also looked after the team until Aztex was dissolved in 2010.

On August 8, 2008, the club's first player was introduced. It was the Mexican goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo who came from the Austin Aztex U23. He was named the USL Premier Development League's Best Goalkeeper in 2008 .

The team finished their first season in the USL First Division with a 10th place. The play-offs could not be reached that way. In 2010 Austin finished second in the USL Conference of the USSF D2 Pro League. In the play-offs, however, they failed in the quarter-finals against Montreal Impact .

On October 25, 2010, it was officially confirmed that Austin Aztex FC will move into the new Orlando City franchise .

Stadion

The home games were played in 2008 at Nelson Field at Reagan High School and in 2009 and 2010 in House Park . Nelson Field holds 8,800 spectators and is the sports facility for LBJ High School, Anderson High School, and John H. Reagan High School. House Park holds 6,500 spectators.

Austin Aztex U23

Shortly after it was announced that the Aztexs will play in the First Division, the club took over the USL Premier Development League club Austin Stampede and renamed it Austin Aztex U23. This team was part of the Aztex development structure until the end of 2009.

The team plays their home games at Dragon Stadium on the grounds of Round Rock High School in Round Rock, Texas .

The team's coach was German Wolfgang Sühnholz , a former soccer player for FC Bayern Munich .
