Jorge Antonio Villafaña (born September 16, 1989 in Anaheim , California as Jorge Antonio Flores ) is an American football player on the position of midfielder and defender .

He has been under contract with Santos Laguna since 2016, playing in Liga MX , the highest Mexican soccer league, and made his debut in the US national soccer team in 2017 .

Club career

Childhood and youth

Jorge Villafaña was born as Jorge Antonio Flores on September 16, 1989 and only took his mother's surname in November 2011 and has since appeared as Jorge Antonio Villafaña. He spent part of his childhood in the United States, but much of it in the city of Pénjamo in the Mexican state of Guanajuato , where he had moved with his mother Juanita when he was just one year old. When his mother returned to the United States when he was five, he stayed in Mexico and lived with his aunt and grandmother, with his mother, who works in the textile industry, supporting the family and sending money to Mexico. Only at an advanced age did the then 15-year-old come to live with his mother, who had meanwhile married, in the United States, although at that time he did not speak or understand English . Although he found it difficult due to his linguistic deficits, he showed with his performance in the soccer team of the school sports department Anaheim High School , to which he belonged, and sometimes led them as team captain . Furthermore, he was considered the team's Most Valuable Player and was also part of the Santa Ana Development Soccer Program Juventus from 2004 to 2007 ; yet he was not on the radar of college or professional teams.

The midfielder made the leap into Major League Soccer after becoming the first player to ever win this selection in 2007 via Sueño MLS , a nationally broadcast reality show that sought out the United States' top undiscovered soccer player. His uncle had signed him up in February 2007 for the show, which broadcasted 10-minute segments on Univision's sports program República Deportiva and which promised the winner a trial training session with the MLS franchise CD Chivas USA . Subsequently, he was a member of the Academy of CD Chivas USA in 2007, where he appeared in the U-19 team and scored as many goals in three games against reserve teams on a tour of Mexico before he was in July 2007 was offered a professional contract, which Sueño , his nickname (in German : dream ), also accepted.

Moderate breakthrough in MLS

After he appeared as a professional player of CD Chivas USA on July 25, 2007, he made his professional debut on September 9, 2007 in a 3-0 win over the New York Red Bulls when he played in the 76th minute of Preki was substituted on. This was also his only competitive stint for the MLS franchise from California, which wrote the most successful of its previous and later history this year. In the final classification of the regular season , the team ranked first in the Western Conference , but retired early in the Conference Semifinals against the Kansas City Wizards . The team also came to an abrupt end in the 2007 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup when they lost 3-1 in their first game, the third-round game against the Seattle Sounders . Even when receiving the MLS Supporters' Shield, the Chivas were only barely defeated by the DC United franchise by two points. As runner-up to receive the MLS Supporters' Shield, the team was qualified for the Preliminary Round for the CONCACAF Champions League 2008/09 , but was defeated there by Tauro FC from Panama with a total score of 1: 3 on the return leg and therefore failed participation in the final round. Jorge Flores, as he called himself back then, played for his team in both games. A few weeks earlier, the team took part in the North American SuperLiga 2008 as second overall in the 2007 MLS game year , but was eliminated from the current tournament as third in Group B in the group phase.

The MLS game year 2008 , which ended in second place in regular time in the Western Conference , was just as successful for the Chivas as the previous year . The left-footer used as midfielder has already been used in eleven championship games this year, where he was able to register three times as a goalscorer and scored these three goals in three games in a row. In the play-offs at the end of the season, the team was again defeated in the conference semifinals , this time to the Real Salt Lake franchise . As a year before, the team came to a quick end in the 2008 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup , when they were again defeated in the first game in the third round against the Seattle Sounders. Due to the placement in the summarized end table, the team had a starting place in the North American SuperLiga 2009 , in which the team was eliminated again early and was clearly inferior to Group A as the last. The 1.75 m tall midfielder was used by coach Preki in all three group matches.

In the sometimes quite tightly staggered final table of Major League Soccer 2009 , Flores reached fourth place in regular time with the CD Chivas USA and was eliminated again in the conference semifinals ; in this case against Los Angeles Galaxy . Flores himself was used in nine games, of which he was on the lawn in three games from the start and for the full duration of the game and was always substituted in the six other games. Due to the final position in the summarized table, the team qualified again for the North American SuperLiga . As has been the case several times in previous years, the team again failed to advance in the competition in 2010 and dropped out of the tournament early as third in Group A. Once again, the franchise was subject to a subclass team in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2009 ; this time Charleston Battery with 1: 3, again in the first game in the third round.

On the way to becoming a regular from 2011

Under the new coach Martin Vasquez , who previously worked as an assistant coach at the franchise for a few years before he was active as an assistant coach at FC Bayern Munich from 2008 to 2009 , the successes largely failed to materialize. Jorge Flores was often unused on the bench this year and had eight league appearances and one goal by the end of the season. At the end of the year, the team ranked behind on the eighth and thus last place in the Western Conference and came in the combined final table only thanks to the even worse team from DC United on the 15th and thus penultimate overall place. Only in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2010 the team was able to convince to some extent and after victories over the Austin Aztex and Houston Dynamo reached the semi-finals, in which the eventual cup winner Seattle Sounders FC won the game. For CD Chivas USA, this was the greatest success in the US football cup since the franchise was founded.

It was only under the 27-time US international and 260-time MLS player Robin Fraser that Jorge Flores made his breakthrough in the franchise in the 2011 game year . For the midfielder, who can also be used on the defensive, 25 of 34 possible league appearances followed, where he contributed one goal and, for the first time, an assist. In the final standings, the Chivas ranked penultimate place in their conference and took 15th of 18 places in the overall table. In the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2011 the franchise was not represented this year. However, there were no successes under Fraser, which proved a last place in the Western Conference in the 2012 game year and a penultimate place in the overall table. In his 14 appearances in the regular season, he played through eight over the full length of the game and in the end came again on a hit and an assist. In the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2012 , however, it was different , in which the team won over the Carolina RailHawks and the Charlotte Eagles again made it to the semifinals. There, however, the franchise was again subject to Seattle Sounders FC, which subsequently lost to Sporting Kansas City in overtime in the final.

After Robin Fraser was fired after the end of the season in November 2012, the franchise announced the signing of José Luis Sánchez Solá as the new head coach about a month later . Under the Mexican, Villafaña then returned more and more and completed 20 championship games in the regular season in 2013 , 15 of which he was on the lawn in 15 games. He managed one goal and the previous career high of four assists. In the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2013 , the team made it to the fourth round and lost to the Carolina RailHawks from the second division. In the league, the team did not come back over a ninth and thus last place in the Western Conference and a penultimate place in the summarized final table. This year, the Chivas also had by far the lowest average attendance in the entire league, which, in addition to the lack of success, contributed to the early dissolution of the franchise.

Moved to the Portland Timbers

After 86 league games and seven goals for the CD Chivas USA, Jorge Villafaña, who adopted her maiden name in honor of his mother in November 2011, was drafted to the Portland Timbers via the MLS Re-Entry Draft 2013 . The Portland Timbers received the 2nd pick from CD Chivas USA in the re-entry draft, as well as the rights to Jorge Villafaña in exchange for the 17th pick and the rights to defender Andrew Jean-Baptiste . His real breakthrough came with the winner of the regular season of the Western Conference and third overall of the 2013 game year. However, it took a few rounds before Villafaña, two months after the start of the 2014 season , made his league debut for the Timbers and only came to match practice as a substitute. By the end of the season he was used by Caleb Porter , under whom he had already played in the US U-23 national team , in 19 league games, of which he started in 17 from the beginning. During the regular championship he scored one goal and prepared two goals for his teammates.

Due to the placement of his team in the previous championship, Villafaña was also used in the CONCACAF Champions League 2014/15 , in which the Timbers started with participation in the group stage . In Group E, the team had to play against CD Olimpia from Honduras and Alpha United from Guyana ; despite three wins and only one league, as well as a better goal difference, the Americans only finished second behind the Hondurans and left the tournament early. The versatile Jorge Villafaña was used in the first game against Alpha United, was then not in the official squad in the next two games and only came back to play in the last game against CD Olimpia. In the league, the Portland Timbers took sixth place in the Western Conference and barely made it into the season-closing play-offs; The franchise came in eleventh place in the overall table, which is sometimes quite densely staggered. In the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2014 , the team entered in the fourth round and made it to the quarterfinals after victories over Orlando City U-23 in the fourth round and Sporting Kansas City in the fifth round, where the franchise was the Seattle Sounders FC lost 1: 3 in extra time.

After he had already been a regular for much of the season in 2014, he only arrived as this in the 2015 MLS game year . Villafaña, who was mainly used as a left defender, was used in 33 of 34 possible league games and was a regular player on the pitch in each of these games. He was rarely taken out of the game by Caleb Porter shortly before the end of the game, which is why he also had 2,929 minutes played in the 2015 regular season. In the regular season he got one goal and four assists. With the team he brought it to a series of nine unbeaten championship games in a row (October 14th to December 6th) in the course of the year, which only New England Revolution had managed from March 21st to May 16th this game year . In the final classification of the regular season, the Timbers took third place in the Western Conference and were tied with the second-placed franchise Vancouver Whitecaps , which, however, had a goal difference seven hits better. After regular time, the team that ranked fifth in the combined final table entered the play-off phase.

There the Portland Timbers won the game in the knockout round on penalties against Sporting Kansas City and came after a draw and a win against the Whitecaps and another win and another draw against FC Dallas to the final game , the MLS Cup . In this, the Portland Timbers sat down after two early hits by Diego Valeri , who scored the 1-0 lead after just 27 seconds and scored the fastest goal in the history of the MLS Cup, and Rodney Wallace against the Columbus Crew with 2: 1 and won the championship title in Major League Soccer for the first time in their history. Villafaña's performance was widely praised in the media, especially in this game. In the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2015 , after a win in extra time over Seattle Sounders FC in round 4, the team suffered an early break in the following fifth round when they lost 2-0 to Real Salt Lake.

Transfer to Mexico

Jorge Villafaña as Santos Laguna player (2016)

Immediately after the great triumph with the Portland Timbers, Villafaña, which had already been courted several times during the current season, was handed over to the highest Mexican football league . Santos Laguna had acquired the left-back for a sum of just under a million US dollars . As a regular player, he started for the team in the Clausura 2016 and made his debut in the first game, a 2-0 away defeat against Club León , when he played through from the start and for the full duration of the match. This was followed by another five league games for the left-back, in which he played through before he sat on the bench in four of the following five championship games without use. Only in the twelfth championship round did coach Luis Zubeldía use him again as a regular player, after which he was on the field for the full 90 minutes in all remaining games of the Clausura 2016. In the final table of the Clausura 2016, Santos Laguna ranked seventh and thus qualified for participation in the season-closing Liguillas of the Clausura 2016. In these, the team was eliminated in the quarter-finals with a total score of 3: 4 from the return leg against the CF Pachuca from. Here, too, Jorge Villafaña was involved as a regular in both games. During this season he also took part with the team in the CONCACAF Champions League 2015/16 , for which they had qualified as champions of the Clausura 2015 . When Villafaña joined the team, they had already successfully mastered the group stage as group winners and met Los Angeles Galaxy in the quarter-finals. After a 0-0 draw in the first leg, the Mexicans were successful in the second leg 4-0 and met Club America in the subsequent semi-finals . After another 0-0 draw in the first leg, Santos Laguna only lost 1-0 in extra time in the second leg and thus missed the Champions League final. Left-footed Jorge Villafaña played in all four games over the full length of the game.

Under Luis Zubeldía , Villafaña started as a regular in the Apertura 2016 and remained in his traditional position on the left side of the defensive row after Zubeldía was replaced by José Manuel de la Torre after a botched start to the season . After playing his last championship game on September 26, 2016, he was not part of the official Santos Laguna squad in the following four championship games and was on the bench in the last two games of Apertura 2016 without being used. At Apertura 2016, the team finished 16th out of 18 places. He also appeared for his team in the Copa MX Apertura 2016 , but retired from the current competition after three draws and one defeat in the group stage. Also in the Clausura 2017 his coach no longer used him as a regular player. After three games in a row in which he sat on the bench without a use, he was released for the games of the fourth and fifth round to play with the US national soccer team , for which he made his debut that year. After that, he continued to sit on the bench without being used or was not available to the official squad at all, before returning to action on March 18, 2017, after not having played in an official Santos Laguna game for six months. In the 1-1 away draw against Club Tijuana , he played through the full 90 minutes and was then released from league play again for two international matches in the United States.

National team career

U-20 and U-23 missions

Soon after his move to CD Chivas USA managed Jorge Flores, what was his name at this time, the jump in the U-20 squad of the United States and attended a training camp in this issue also includes Nov-Dec Buenos Aires part . During the eleven-day stay, he was used in all three of his team's games against his peers from Paraguay , Argentina and Uruguay . An assist to a match-equalizing goal against the reserve team from CA River Plate and a match-equalizing goal against the U-20 of Argentina contributed to Thomas Rongen's appointment as captain of the U-20 national team. The following year, 2008, Flores and the team took part in the Campos Verde International in Beja , Portugal . He scored his second goal for the U-20 national team, even if it was again not an official international match, in a 2-0 win over the reserves of the Bolton Wanderers on May 7, 2008 in Bolton , England . He was also used in the last group game, a 3-3 draw against El Salvador , for the full 90 minutes.

Regular player in the senior national team

Jorge Villafaña made it into the senior national team of the United States for the first time in March 2016, when then national coach Jürgen Klinsmann brought him into the extended squad for the qualifying game for the 2018 World Cup against Guatemala on March 29, 2016 , but then he did it again weeded out. At the turn of the year 2016/17, Villafaña received a personal invitation to the US national team from the current national coach of the United States, Bruce Arena . He started training with the national team in January 2017 and was in the training camp of the national team towards the end of the month, which was preparing for the upcoming international match against Serbia . In the following friendly against Jamaica , Arena used him right from the start, but was only replaced by veteran DaMarcus Beasley in the 86th minute . In the third group game of the fifth round of the CONCACAF World Cup qualification, the left-back played again from the start on March 24, 2017 and played through to his original position in the 6-0 victory over Honduras .
