The 2012 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup was the 99th edition of the US men's soccer cup. The tournament was organized by the United States Soccer Federation . The tournament began on May 15 and ended with the cup final on August 8, 2012.
The Seattle Sounders FC won the tournament in 2009 and 2011 each time and went into the race as the defending champion. Seattle was able to advance to the final again, but had to admit defeat to Sporting Kansas City on penalties. For the first time in the history of the competition, all 32 US-based teams from the top three league levels of North American league football will take part. Teams in these leagues from other countries or territories ( Canada , Antigua and Barbuda , Puerto Rico ) are not allowed to participate as they are not members of the United States Soccer Federation. Overall, the field of participants was increased from 40 to 64 teams.
As the winner of the tournament, Sporting Kansas City will receive a starting place in the group stage of the 2013/14 CONCACAF Champions League .

All rounds are played in individual games without a second leg. In the event of a tie after the end of normal playing time, extra time of 15 minutes will be played twice. If the score is still even after that, a penalty shootout with five shooters follows. The Roman number after the name of the team in the result tables refers to the league level. Since the US Football Association only officially classifies the three professional leagues into levels, all other teams are at league level IV or V. Level IV contains teams in the semi-profile USL PDL and NPSL, and level V includes the other teams, regardless of the league in which they are in play.
1 round
The first round of the tournament was played on May 15, 2012.

3rd round
The third round was played on May 29th and 30th, 2012. The winners of the second round each faced one of the 16 representatives of Major League Soccer, the top division in US professional football. Only eight of the MLS teams were able to prevail. The victory of the Harrisburg City Islanders against MLS participant New England Revolution was particularly spectacular . After no goals had been scored in regular time, New England initially took the lead 3-0 in extra time, before Harrisburg also scored three goals in the last ten minutes of extra time and thus saved themselves in the penalty shoot-out, which they ultimately won. Of the three amateur teams still in competition, two were able to prevail again against a higher-class opponent. The Michigan Bucks knocked out the Chicago Fire and Cal FC defeated the Portland Timbers away from home, each in overtime.
