Tukwila is an American city in King County , Washington state .
The city is located in the greater Seattle area and has a population of 19,107.
history
The first inhabitants in what is now the city area were the Duwamish . They lived near the Duwamish River . The city name Tukwila is a name from the Chinook Wawa language and means nut or hazelnut. Other sources claim it derives from the Indian word T'awedIc, which means duck.
In 1853 the area was settled by the Canadian Joseph Foster. He later came to be known as the father of Tukwila and ran King County for 22 years. In later years the city grew into an agricultural center. The population grew steadily and more and more industry settled there.
Tukwila received city rights in 1908.

After United States Census Bureau extends Tukwila on an area of 24.81 km 2 , of which 1.06 km 2 water surface.
It is bordered by Seattle to the north, Bryn Mawr-Skyway (north-east), Renton , Kent (south-east) to the east, SeaTac and Des Moines to the south, and Burien to the west .
Demographics
According to the 2010 census, the city has 19,107 inhabitants, 7,157 households and 4,124 families. The population density is 2,083.6 / km 2 . Of the population, 43.9% are White, 17.9% African-American, 1.1% Native American, 19.0% Asian, 2.8% Pacific Islander, 9.3% Other, and 6.0% Mixed . 17.5% are Latinos.
33.3% of the 7,157 households have children under the age of 18. 36.6% of them are married and cohabiting couples, 13.8% are single mothers, 7.2% are single fathers, 42.4% are not families. 32.2% of all households are made up of singles, 5.9% are single people over 65. The average size of households is 2.64. The average family has 3.42 people.
24.2% of the population are under 18, 10.2% between 18 and 24, 32.7% between 25 and 44, 25.1% between 45 and 64, 8% over 65 years. The median age is 33.8 years. 48.1% women and 51.9% men live in the city.

Tukwila is the intersection of various roads, railway lines and river routes. In the city there is the Westfield Southcenter, one of the largest shopping malls in the region. Sports
In town is the Starfire Sports Complex. This sports facility consists of several soccer fields and is run by the non-profit organization Starfire Sports. The Seattle Sounders Women football team has been playing here since 2003. The Seattle Sounders FC reserve has also played here in the United Soccer League since 2015 .
