Duwamish River is the name of the last 12 miles of the Green River in Washington state . Its heavily industrialized estuary is known as the Duwamish Waterway .

history

Originally, the White River and Green River did not flow into each other at Auburn , but rather flowed into the Black River at Tukwila and formed the Duwamish River. In 1906 the White River changed its course in the course of a great flood and has since emptied into the Puyallup River . A few years later, in 1912, the Cedar River was diverted and now flows into Lake Washington instead of the Black River as before, although the lake itself still drains into it. With the opening of the Lake Washington Ship Canal in 1916, the level of the lake dropped about three feet and the Black River dried up. Because of this, the point where the name changed from Green River to Duwamish River is no longer the confluence of the Green and Black Rivers, although the location has not changed.

The river is named after the Indian tribe of Duwamish named.

use

The Duwamish Waterway empties into Elliott Bay near Seattle , Washington and is divided into two canals, the East and West Waterway , by the man-made Harbor Island .

Due to the heavy pollution from industrial use, the lower 8-kilometer section of the river has been declared a Superfund project by the United States Environmental Protection Agency . The pollutants in the river include PCB , PAH , mercury and phthalic acid esters . The rehabilitation of the river was controversial. The original plan was to dredge the river and dump the sewage sludge into Commencement Bay, about 40 kilometers southwest, near Tacoma , but local opposition to the plan forced the sludge to be transported to Klickitat County in southern Washington.

There is currently an active PCB leak on the north side of the river. The pollutants are known to originate via drainage lines from the north end of Boeing's manufacturing area , but the exact cause is not clear. For this reason, the rehabilitation of the river is stopped until the cause of the pollutants is found.
