Burien is a city in King County , Washington , United States . At the 2000 census it had 31,881 inhabitants. The city was founded in 1880 by the German Gottlieb Von Boorian .

history

Settlement in the Burien area dates back to about 1870 when Mike Kelly of Seattle hiked up the hills. Wherever he came out from under the trees, according to tradition, he exclaimed, "This is truly a sunny dale." (German for example: This is really a sunny spot. ) According to the Heimstättengesetz , he acquired 160 acres of land and built a house and his farm on it.

Ten years later, the German emigrant Gottlieb von Boorian arrived in Sunnydale. At that time the settlement consisted of a few smaller houses and there were only footpaths, no streets or public buildings. Von Boorian settled on the southeast corner of Lake Burien and made the parish the town that bears his today, although the name has been misspelled over the years. A land development office was set up and more settlers came here.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Seattle residents discovered Three Tree Point as a place to visit. In 1915 a railway connection was put into operation. This led roughly where Ambaum Boulevard is today, from Burien via White Center to Seattle. The train was called The Toonerville Trolley by the residents . However, it was dismantled after a few years.

The Highline Times was founded in 1945 and is now a weekly local newspaper that is sold primarily to subscribers.

Burien remained a non-statute municipality until February 28, 1993. In late 2004, the city considered adding North Highline with White Center and Boulevard Park , which would have doubled the city's area. However, many citizens opposed this plan.
