North Bend is a city ( City ) in King County in the State of Washington on the edge of the Seattle metropolitan area . The US census estimated the population at 6,739 in 2016.

Location of North Bend in King County

After the Weyerhaeuser sawmill closed, North Bend became a dormitory town of Seattle , some 30 mi (48 km) west. The city was made famous by David Lynch's television series Twin Peaks . North Bend is the headquarters of Nintendo North Bend , the main North American production facility of the game console manufacturer Nintendo .

history

Mt. Si and Little Si behind a food market.

The Native Americans living in the Snoqualmie Valley, led by Chief Patkanim , sided with the settlers in the wars of the 1850s, lost their land titles with the Treaty of Point Elliott when the settlers consented. Some of the soldiers serving in these wars, e.g. B. the Kellogg brothers and sisters built huts near their log houses; Nevertheless, Jeremiah Borst is considered to be the first settler in the valley (1858).

In 1865, Matts Peterson settled in what eventually became North Bend. Heavily indebted, he sold the property to Borst and moved to the east of the mountains. Borst wrote to Will Taylor , who had left the area to mine in California, and offered him Peterson's property in exchange for work. Taylor returned and prospered as a farmer and operator of a trading post. He called North Bend Snoqualmie , but because another nearby settlement had the same name, he renamed it Mountain View . The Post Office Department , however, objected to the name Mountain View objection, that the place of its location near a northern curve (English: north bend ) of the South Fork Snoqualmie River in North Bend has been renamed. North Bend was officially recognized as a local authority on March 12, 1909 .

geography

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 11.16 km², of which 11.06 km² is land and 0.1 km² is water.

North Bend is in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains just 50 km (31 mi) east of Seattle in the upper valley of the Snoqualmie River. The closest town is Snoqualmie , approximately 5 km (3 mi) northwest. Both cities are near the center of the Mountains to Sound Greenway . The most striking geological feature nearby is Mount Si , which looms over the city. Mount Si is 1,270 m high and towers over the city, which itself is only about 130 m high. A 6.5 km (4 mi) long path winds to the summit, which also has a sheer wall 1,100 m high.

On July 6, 2009, Tanner and the Stilson area were incorporated.

Surrounding communities

To the northwest of North Bend lies Snoqualmie , to the west Preston , to the southwest Hobart and to the southeast Snoqualmie Pass .

Culture

The historic McGrath Hotel

The McGrath Hotel is located on the site of William Henry Taylor's cabin who founded North Bend in 1889. In October 1921, Jack McGrath and his wife Caroline bought the land for their future business, McGrath's Café; the construction was completed in 1922 as a single-storey restaurant. Early in 1926 the building was extended by two bay windows to the west to create a hotel lobby (now the bar) and a second floor was added to the entire building to accommodate the hotel rooms of the new McGrath Hotel. After many years of no maintenance, the McGrath was bought by a local couple who spent two years renovating it. Nowadays it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places . The ground floor is currently home to a popular pub and brewery, Brickyard Brewing .

North Bend Theater

The North Bend Theater opened its doors on April 9, 1941. It has been operated continuously as an independent movie theater since then. The theater underwent extensive renovation and reconstruction in 1999. Thanks to a successful fundraising campaign (more than US $ 100,000), the theater was once again saved from being closed in 2013 and the 35 mm film system was replaced by a digital 4K video system. Throughout all the renovations, the unmistakable character of the Art Deco building from 1941 was retained.

The Snoqualmie Valley Transportation offers door-to-door transportation to the general public in North Bend, Snoqualmie, Preston, Fall City, Carnation, Duvall and Monroe.
