Enumclaw ( [ iːnəmklɔː ] ) is a city ( City ) in King County in the US state, Washington . According to the 2010 US Census, the population was 10,669. The estimate for 2015 was 11,609 inhabitants.
The Enumclaw Plateau , on which the city is located, was created by a volcanic mud flow ( lahar ) from Mount Rainier about 5,700 years ago.
The name Enumclaw is derived from one of the Salish languages meaning "place of evil spirits" obviously with reference to Enumclaw Mountain. The mountain is approximately 9.5 kilometers (6 miles) north and the naming refers either to some nasty incidents that took place there or to the occasional violent storms which, coming from the east, plague the region. Native American mythology tells the story of two brothers from the Pacific Northwest - Enumclaw and Kapoonis - whose father turned them into thunder and lightning. The city of Enumclaw translates its name as "Thunder Rolls".
history
One of the first white settlers in southern King County was Allen L. Porter. About 5 km (3 mi) west of today's Enumclaw he claimed in 1853 a 1.3 km² large parcel on the White River . He maintained a troubled relationship with the Smalkamish tribe (one of the Muckleshoot's ancestors ) for some time , and in 1855 his hut was burned to the ground. Porter, who had been warned beforehand by a member of his tribe friend, hid in the woods until the attackers withdrew. After warning the settlers at Fort Steilacoom , he left the area and moved to Roy . He should never return to Enumclaw.
Enumclaw itself was founded in 1879 by Frank and Mary Stevenson. Northern Pacific Railroad planned their transcontinental route through the place in 1885 after an offer from the Stevensons was accepted over cleared and leveled land to build a siding. Confident about the further development of the area, the Stevensons drew up a land map together with King County in the same year. They built a hotel and gave a lot for a saloon and general store.
Initially the city was named Stevensonville after the founders. One resident suggested Enumclaw after the sawed-off promontory north of the city. The uniqueness of the name won over the community.
On January 11, 1895, Mount Baldy, a small peak above the city, “broke out”. Despite the huge fire and smoke, neither losses nor damage were reported and the conflagration was kept to a minimum by the residents. Hops were grown during the 1880s and 1890s . When the yield collapsed due to disease and economic decline, the residents switched to dairy farming, which continues to this day. The first census of 1900 led to a population of 483.
In the 1890s, the Northern Pacific Railroad moved its route through Palmer , a few miles east of the city. The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad moved a branch line through Enumclaw in 1910.
The city was recognized as a local authority on January 27, 1913 . A long-awaited route to east Washington opened in 1929 across the Naches Pass Highway . In the 1950s, the Enumclaw Insurance Group expanded its business significantly and the headquarters became one of the main employers in the city. The company operates as an insurance company in Washington , Oregon , Idaho and Utah .
A zoophile incident occurred in 2005 on a farm in a parish of King County about 5 miles northwest of Enumclaw. The aircraft engineer Kenneth Pinyan from Gig Harbor, Washington, employed by Boeing, died after passive anal sex with a horse. The case and the attendant media attention was used by Washington State to condemn such bestialities . Until 2015, according to journalist Charles Mudede , the residents of Enumclaw did not want to admit the incident and the great excitement among local horse owners.
economy
Enumclaw has withstood the temptations of hypermarkets and maintained its livable, rural image. The city center is full of small shops, restaurants and service providers. At least five major employers have chosen Enumclaw as their headquarters: Helac Corp, Mutual of Enumclaw, Nor-Pac Seating, Nether Industries and Hill AeroSystems. Enumclaw has no business and occupation tax and enjoys one of the lowest sales tax rates in Washington State. Enumclaw has chosen to participate in the Regional Transit Authority (RTA), a regional transport association that covers large parts of the Counties King, Pierce and Snohomish; This will reduce Enumclaw's sales tax rate, trailer fees and property taxes - saving the local economy and residents thousands of dollars and increasing Enumclaw's competitiveness.
tourism
Enumclaw is the gateway to Mount Rainier National Park and the closest location to Washington's premier ski resort, Crystal Mountain . Enumclaw is also the starting point of Washington State Route 410 ("Chinook Scenic Byway"). Washington's Yakima wine region can be reached via Chinook Pass in summer and fall . Three state parks ( Nolte , Flaming Geyser , and Kanaskat Palmer ) are within 15 minutes of Enumclaw ; the same applies to the Federation Forest State Park . There are many horse and cattle ranches on the Enumclaw Plateau; Most of the producing dairy farms (16 with drinking milk production) in Countys King and Pierce can be found here. Enumclaw City Council operates an Economic Development Committee for economic development; the city maintains a restricted tourism committee.
crime
The security company Safewise ranked Enumclaw 33rd in the list of safe cities in Washington in 2014 and the security portal Background Checks gave Enumclaw's rank in Washington 3 for 2016.
geography
The city is set in flat, flat agricultural land in the east of the lowlands on Puget Sound . The flat relief in the middle of the mountainous region is due to the formation of a lahar from the nearby Mount Rainier .
The city is unique in that the protection of the farms means that no expansion is possible on three sides and there are protected forest areas on the fourth side (to the east). The city is practically embedded in the cascade foothills.
According to the United States Census Bureau , the city occupies a total of 11.06 square kilometers, of which 11.03 is land and 0.03 is water.
Although Enumclaw is entirely in King County, the city owns some parkland within the boundaries of Pierce County.
climate
The region is climatically characterized by very warm (but not hot), dry summers. The monthly average temperatures do not exceed 22 ° C. According to the Köppen and Geiger climate classification , the region belongs to the warm summer Mediterranean climate . Compared to Seattle, Enumclaw is typically around 6–11 ° C warmer in summer and 6–11 ° C colder in winter. On average, two to three storms occur each year, each lasting up to three days. These storms occur with easterly winds of 9–27 m / s (= 32.4–97.2 km / h). Enumclaw town center is 228 meters above sea level. The higher elevation brings Enumclaw sunshine when most of Puget Sound sinks into fog, as well as more snow than Seattle.
