Location of Pacific in King County (Washington)

Pacific is a city ( City ) in King County and Pierce County in the State of Washington . Primarily located in King County, Pacific had 6,606 inhabitants at the 2010 United States Census . Like its northern neighbor, Algona , Pacific is sometimes mistaken for part of Auburn .

history

Pacific was parceled out on August 10, 1906 by real estate speculator Clarence Dayton Hillman as "CD Hillman's Pacific City Addition to the City of Seattle". Official recognition took place on August 10, 1909.

Record rains in November 2006 drove the White River over its banks in Pacific City Park , creating a 100,000 m² lake.

2009 flood

On January 8, 2009, the United States Army Corps of Engineers drained water from Mud Mountain Dam into the White River. The action was necessary because of the increased pressure on the dam, which had reached its capacity limit due to heavy rains falling across the Puget Sound region. A large amount of water was drained very quickly, resulting in rapid and massive flooding in Pacific. Those affected in this way had almost no idea of the impending catastrophe. One of those affected was the locally and internationally acclaimed musician Jerry Miller , a founding member of Moby Grape . He had just moved from Tacoma to Pacific shortly before . Miller lost almost all of his possessions, including forty years of memories of his musical career. Help for those affected came from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

geography

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 6.29 km², of which 6.27 km² are land and the remainder is water. The lower White River , also known as the Stuck River , flows through the eastern part of the Pacific between Auburn and Sumner .
