Carnation is a city ( City ) in King County in the State of Washington . The population was 1,786 at the 2010 United States Census .

history

First settled in 1865, Carnation was officially recognized as a local authority on December 30, 1912 under the name of Tolt . The name was changed to Carnation in 1917, back to Tolt on May 3, 1928, and finally to Carnation on October 29, 1951. The name Carnation was chosen in honor of a nearby research farm owned by the Carnation Milk Products Company . Today Carnation is also a Nestlé dairy brand .

Carnation is at 47 ° 38'54 "N / 121 ° 54'31" W. According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of ​​3.06 km², of which 3 km² is land and the remainder is water. The city is on the east bank of the Snoqualmie River just north of the confluence of the Tolt River .

Attractions

Camlann Medieval Village , a museum village of a medieval English village, is about 4 miles north of Carnation. Founded in the early 1980s, Camlann has been devoted to educating and entertaining schools, clubs, families and individuals, and demonstrating what life in England might have been like in 1376.

Remlinger Farms is an active working farm less than a mile outside of Carnation, where families can spend free time with animals and plants, eat locally produced food, and ride carousels.

2010 Census

As of the 2010 census , Carnation had 1,786 residents, 631 households, and 474 families. The population density was 594.5 per km ². There were 665 housing units at an average density of 221.4 per km².

The population was 85.8% white , 0.9% African American , 1% Indian , 3.1% Asian , 0.1% Pacific islanders , and 7.1% others "Races" and 2.1% from two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 12.7% of the population.

Of the 631 households, 45% had children under the age of 18, 58.5% were run by married couples living together , 10% by single mothers and 6.7% by single fathers; 24.9% were non-families. 19% of the households were singles and 6.9% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.83 and the average family size was 3.24.

The median age in the city was 34.9 years. 30.1% of the population were under 18, 6.8% between 18 and 24, 29.4% between 25 and 44, 27.7% between 45 and 64 and 6 65 years or older. 49.8% of the population were men and 50.2% women.

Carnation has a high owner-occupied home rate of 73.31% for King County. The rate is significantly higher than in nearby cities like Redmond (50.19%), Bellevue (53.78%) and Seattle (44.91%).

Census 2000

As of the 2000 census , Carnation had 1,893 residents, 636 households, and 487 families. The population density was 664.4 per km ². There were 650 housing units at an average density of 228.2 per km².

The population consisted of 91.76% whites , 1.32% Indians , 3.59% Asians , 0.16% Pacific islanders , 1.8% other "races" and 1 , 37% from two or more “races” . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 3.91% of the population.

Of the 636 households, 48.9% had children under the age of 18, 61.8% were run by married couples living together, and 9.9% by single mothers; 23.4% were non-families. 17.5% of the households were singles and 7.2% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.94 and the average family size 3.4 people.

The median age in the city was 32 years. 34.4% of the population were under 18, 6.6% between 18 and 24, 37.5% between 25 and 44, 15.9% between 45 and 64 and 5.7 65 years or older. For every 100 women there were 98.6 men, and for those over the age of 18 it was 96.5 men for every 100 women.

Men had a median income of US $ 46,667 compared to US $ 33,281 for women. The per capita income was US $ 21,907. police

Police services for Carnation have changed several times throughout its history. By the end of 2004, these were offered by the King County Sheriff's Office on a contract basis. From late 2004 to January 1, 2014, the City of Duvall Police Department was under contract. Since January 1, 2014, the contract has again been with the King County Sheriff's Office . According to the contract with the KCSO, a police officer is expressly responsible for Carnation. If he is out of service, the police officers patrolling the neighboring community-free areas answer emergency calls from the city.
