HistoryLink is a website that provides an encyclopedia on the history of the US state of Washington . The website had nearly 7,000 entries in 2016 and drew around 5,000 visitors a day. It contains 500 biographies and more than 14,000 pictures.

History Ink, a nonprofit historians organization, produces HistoryLink.org and claims it is the first nationwide online encyclopedia of local and state history specifically made for the Internet. Founding President and Managing Director was Walt Crowley.

founding

Crowley intended in 1997 a historical encyclopedia for Seattle and King County to be published on the 150th anniversary of the Denny Party , a group of American pioneers. His wife, Marie McCaffrey, suggested that the encyclopedia be published on the Internet.

The two founded History Ink with Paul Dorpat on November 10, 1997 with financial support from Patsy Bullitt Collins, a member of the wealthy and prominent Seattle Bullitt family . HistoryLink.org prototype went online on May 1, 1998, raising additional money for formal 1999 release. In 2003, HistoryLink.org expanded the content to cover all of Washington. In the meantime, History Ink continued to focus on publishing historical books.

Honors

Crowley and HistoryLink.org have received numerous awards including

  • the 2007 History Award from the Pacific Northwest Historians Guild
  • the 2001 Washington State Historic Preservation Office Media Prize
  • the Best Long-Term Project 2000 award from the Association of King County Historical Organizations
