Palmer is a civil parish in King County , Washington state . It is located on the Green River near Kanaskat-Palmer State Park .
Palmer was originally a telegraph station on the Northern Pacific Railway (NPR), which was established around 1886 during the construction of the railway line over Stampede Pass . The place was first called "Green River". It was renamed in 1888 in honor of George L. Palmer, then a raftsman and later an official of the NPR. The original route over the Stampede Pass ran from Tacoma to Puyallup , where the route swung east and continued over Orting , Buckley and Enumclaw to Palmer. The railroad followed the Green River to Lester to Stampede Pass.
Between 1899 and 1900, the Northern Pacific built a branch from Palmer Junction (east of Palmer), which crossed the Green River and led via Kanaskat and later westwards via Ravensdale , Covington to Auburn . This route is still used today by the BNSF Railway .
