Buckley is a city ( City ) in Pierce County in the State of Washington . At the United States Census 2010 there were 4,354 residents; a 2015 estimate showed a population of 4,550. Buckley is located below Mount Rainier and is known for hosting an annual lumberjack show.

The decisive battle in the Puget Sound War took place in Connell's Prairie, about 6 miles west of Buckley, in 1856. Coal deposits were discovered in Wilkeson in 1875. In the same year, Jeremiah “Jerry” Stilley was the first non-Indian to permanently settle west of today's city. A railway line from Tacoma to Wilkeson was built in 1877 to transport coal. In 1877 the current town of Buckley was named "Perkin's Prairie". In 1884 the Northern Pacific Railway built a branch line from Cascade Junction (between South Prairie and today's Buckley) to Perkin's Prairie. The place was named "White River Siding" by a railroad worker. "Dad" Chamberlain opened the first shop in town in 1885.

In 1887 the settlement was renamed after JM Buckley, a district chief of the Northern Pacific Railway . The first school opened in the same year. The following year the place was parceled out by Alexander and Mary Wickersham. In quick succession, sawmills and clapboard plants were founded, which gave the place an upswing. The first post office opened in 1889 and the district court appointed five men to be administrators of the place. That same year Buckley's first newspaper - The Buckley Banner - was founded. In 1890, Buckley was recognized as a local authority after a vote of the electorate . In order to be able to build a cemetery, land was transferred to the city in 1891.

On May 5, 1892, a major fire that broke out on the second floor of the Buckley Lumber Store destroyed most of the business district. On June 17 of the same year, the White River School District erected a new school building at its current location on A Street. The first church was also built in 1892. In addition, the first water supply was installed. On February 24, 1893, the first fire station opened in Buckley. The construction plans for a train station have been completed.

The business district was destroyed again by fire in 1898. That same year, the first high school students began teaching after a school building was built. In 1900 the "Mount Rainier Department" of the "Office of Emergency Services" was founded. In 1902 the school building received an extension; the first library was opened. The first high school degrees were awarded in 1905.

In 1907 a drinking water system was built, the water tower of which is still in operation today; a public power supply was also introduced. In 1909 the school burned down to the ground. That same year, the city established a fire station to replace the Columbia Hose Company, a private fire department. A new (stone) school building was built in 1910 on A-Street. With the completion of the tunneling work for a drainage channel and the construction of the machine house, the “White River Power Plant” was put into operation in 1911. In addition, today's town hall was built in 1911.

In 1912 the roads that had been built with wooden planks were paved. Wickersham Elementary School was built in 1914. Another major fire in the business district ruined most of it. The high school got a vocational school building in 1923. In 1929, the fire station received a car with a motor pump that replaced the previously hand-operated equipment.

Rainier State School opened in 1932. In 1939 the Rainier School, a facility for the disabled, was opened.

The Mud Mountain Dam was completed on the White River in 1942. In 1944, the era of railroad tie production ended with the closure of the Buckley Logging Company sawmill . In 1946 the city limits were expanded to include the grounds of the Rainier School and some farms in the south of the city. The Rainier School received an extension in 1947. The last coal was mined in the same year. In 1948 a kindergarten was opened. The following year the Rainier School expanded again; the Buckley and Enumclaw school districts were merged to form the White River School District.

In 1951 the "Rural Fire District No. 12 ”and in 1952 a new fire station was built. In the same year, the Rainier School received another expansion and a wastewater treatment plant was built. In 1953, the fire station received its first ambulance with a Packard from 1941. The White River School District was dissolved again in 1953; the Wickersham School received an extension.

The Buckley Planning Commission was formed in 1955. The following year a new gymnasium was built at the high school. In 1957 the city established a natural gas supply. The Northern Pacific station was demolished in 1959.

A company of the 19th Special Forces Group, a special unit of the United States National Guard , is stationed in Buckley .

Shooting of the film "Waiting for the Light" with Shirley MacLaine and Teri Garr, completed in 1990, took place in 1989 in Buckley. In 2003 the Elk Head Brewery opened its doors. The following year, White River High School was relocated to its new location.
