history

Downtown Wilkeson
The Holy Trinity Orthodox Church , built in 1900, is a legacy of the many Eastern Europeans who came to work in the mines and quarries around Wilkeson.

Wilkeson was officially recognized on July 24, 1909; a school building is built in the same year. The city is named after Samuel Wilkeson, the father of journalist and pioneer settler Frank Wilkeson.

The following section is from an online biography by Frank Wilkeson:

“[In] his 1869 report on the Cascade Range, Frank [Wilkeson's] father Samuel wrote: 'These forests full of trees - which so captivate the sense of the great and so captivate the sense of beauty that I pause at this picture and I hate to have to part with it - looking in vain for anyone like it on the rest of the globe… 'Like many authors of the time, Samuel indulged in exaggeration, but his love for the cascades seems very authentic. From time to time between 1876 and 1878 one of the four large coal seams in the foothills of the Cascade Range was discovered and exploited; the region is known as the Carbonado . A small village was founded and named after Samuel after the Northern Pacific extended a stretch of Tacoma into this area in 1877. In March 1869 he was appointed secretary of the board of directors of the NP. The region became known for the coking coal ovens as well as for the natural sandstone deposits, which were the raw material for the government buildings in the new capital Olympia. The town of Wilkeson had 3,000 residents at its heyday, but the population now fluctuates around 400. Many of the same leaders of Wilkeson operations also built the coke ovens at Cokedale, about 80 miles north in Skagit County, the led to the founding of the city of Sedro, today Sedro-Woolley . As far as we can tell, neither Frank nor any family member ever lived in the town that was named after them; only his brother Samuel G. Wilkeson invested heavily in the coal companies that were active there ...

Frank's father died in 1889, but from that point on, another Wilkeson invested financially in the Puget Sound region: Samuel Gansevoort Wilkeson, Frank's older brother. Samuel G. first came to Tacoma in 1873, the year the city was selected as the end point of the Northern Pacific. A contemporary of the successful Leonard Howarth of Tacoma, he became wealthy from his activities in the same industries as Howarth - the St. Paul & Tacoma Lumber Co. and the Wilkeson Coal & Coke Co. This company mined coking coal in Wilkeson, the town near Enumclaw which was named in honor of Frank and Sam's father. "

The Handcar Races take place in Wilkeson every year .
