history

The White River from the park

The park's name refers to the Federation of the General Federation of Women's Clubs in Washington (GFWC-WS), an umbrella organization of women's organizations founded in 1890 in the era of progressivism . The GFWC-WS collected the first $ 25,000, which was used to purchase land from a forest company in 1928. Members were concerned about the rapid progress in deforestation in the area and wanted to preserve the remaining primary forest in Washington. The original park was about 8 mi (13 km) west of Snoqualmie Pass and was established in 1934. In the years that followed, storms, the widening of an adjacent highway, and tree felling took a toll on the park, so the lands were sold back to the company in 1938.

A decade later, the current location on the White River was selected and protected as a state park in 1949. Local teacher and GFWC WS member Catherine Montgomery donated the proceeds from a property sale for the park in 1958. This money was used to build the Catherine Montgomery Interpretive Center .
