The Steptoe Butte ( German  Steptoe- Härtling ) is a quartzite island that rises from the dusty loess of the Palouse Hills in Whitman County in the US state of Washington . The 3,612 ft (1,101 m) high hardling is protected as Steptoe Butte State Park ; the park is a 150 acres (60.7 hectare) state-owned recreational area located 12 mi (19 km) east of Colfax . Steptoe Butte and Kamiak Butte are grouped together in the Steptoe and Kamiak Buttes National Natural Landmark .

The rock that forms the rock is more than 400 million years old, in contrast to the 7… 15 million year old Columbia River basalts that form the subsurface beneath the rest of the Palouse. history

The Steptoe Butte was named after Colonel Edward Steptoe . A hotel built by James S. "Cashup" Davis stood on the plateau of the mountain from 1888 to 1908; it burned down several years after it was closed. In 1946, Virgil McCroskey donated 120 acres (48.6 hectares) of land to form the state park, which was later expanded to over 150 acres (60.7 hectares). The lower slopes of the mountain that border the state park were acquired by Kent and Elaine Bassett in 2016. The owners plan to protect their property (437 acres (177 ha)) from urbanization and donate it to the state if necessary.

Leisure and Tourism

A narrow paved road winds around Steptoe Butte and leads to a parking lot on the high plateau. The park offers picnic areas and a nature trail. Popular activities in the park include paragliding, hang gliding, model flying and photography.
