According to the 2000 census , the county had 40,740 people. There were 15,257 households and 8,055 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 88.07% White, 1.53% African American, 0.73% Native American, 5.55% Asian, 0.27% Pacific Islander, and 1.22% other races Groups; 2.63% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.99% of the population.
Of the 15,257 households, 24.60% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 44.20% were married couples living together, 6.20% were single mothers. 47.20% were not families. 29.40% were single households and 7.10% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.91 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 18.10% residents under 18 years of age, 32.60% between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.00% between 25 and 44 years of age, 16.00% between 45 and 64 years of age 9.20% were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 25 years. For every 100 females there were 102.50 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 101.90 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 28,584 , and the median income for a family is $ 44,830. Males had a median income of $ 33,381 versus $ 27,046 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,298. 25.60% of the population and 11.00% of families are below the poverty line. 16.50% of these were under 18 years of age and 5.50% were 65 years of age or older.
