Jefferson County is a county in the US state of Washington with 25,953 residents. The county seat is in Port Townsend .

history
Jefferson County was formed on December 22, 1852 from parts of Thurston County . It was named after Thomas Jefferson , the third President of the United States (1801-1809), the chief author of the American Declaration of Independence and one of the most influential political theorists in the United States.

The county had a population of 25,953 as of the 2000 census . There were 11,645 households and 7,580 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.17% White, 0.42% African American, 2.31% Native American, 1.19% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, and 0.76% other races Groups; 3.02% were from two or more races. 2.06% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 11,645 households, 23.20% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 53.60% were married couples living together, 8.20% were single mothers. 34.90% were not families. 28.50% were single households and 11.70% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.67.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 19.80% of residents under 18 years of age, 5.00% between 18 and 24 years of age, 21.60% between 25 and 44 years of age, 32.50% between 45 and 64 years of age 21.10% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 47 years. For every 100 females there were 95.80 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 94.40 males.
The median income for a household in the 37,869 USD , and the median income for a family was 45,415 USD. Males had a median income of $ 37,210 versus $ 25,831 for females. The per capita income was $ 22,211. 11.30% of the population and 7.20% of families are below the poverty line. 16.60% of them were under 18 years of age and 6.00% were 65 years of age or older.
