Asotin County is a county in the state of Washington in the United States . The county seat is Asotin , the largest town is Clarkston .

geography

The county is located in the extreme southeast of Washington, borders the states of Idaho and Oregon to the east and south, and borders clockwise with the counties: Whitman County , Nez Perce County, Idaho, Wallowa County, Oregon, and Garfield County .

history

The county was formed on October 27, 1883 from the eastern parts of Garfield County . The name of the county comes from the language of the Nez Percé Indians and means "eel river".

The county had a population of 20,551 as of the 2000 census . There were 8,364 households and 5,654 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.62% White, 0.19% African American, 1.27% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, and 0.63% other races Groups; 1.77% were from two or more races. 1.95% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 8,364 households, 31.00% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 51.40% were married couples living together, 11.90% were single mothers. 32.40% were not families. 27.00% were single households and 11.70% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.91 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.50% of residents under 18 years of age, 8.10% between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.10% between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.00% between 45 and 64 years of age 16.30% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 91.10 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 86.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 33,524 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,592. Males had a median income of $ 35,810 versus $ 22,218 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,748. 15.40% of the population and 11.60% of families are below the poverty line. 22.70% of these were under 18 years of age and 6.70% were 65 years of age or older.
