According to the 2000 census , the county had 49,405 people. There were 18,912 households and 13,389 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 88.46% White, 1.19% African American, 3.72% Native American, 1.05% Asian, 0.45% Pacific Islander, and 2.10% other races Groups; 3.03% were from two or more races. 4.78% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 18,912 households, 28.90% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 56.90% were married couples living together, 9.20% were single mothers. 29.20% were not families. 23.30% were single households and 9.90% had someone who was 65 years of age or older.
