history
Columbia County was formed on November 11, 1875 from parts of Walla Walla County and named after the Columbia River .

As of the 2000 census , the county had 4,064 people. There were 1,687 households and 1,138 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.73% White, 0.22% African American, 0.96% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 2.73% other races Groups; 1.89% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 6.35% of the population.
Of the 1,687 households, 27.70% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 56.00% were married couples living together, 8.50% were single mothers. 32.50% were not families. 29.00% were single households and 13.00% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.89 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.90% residents under 18 years of age, 7.00% between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.80% between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.70% between 45 and 64 years of age 18.50% were 65 years of age or over.
