Dayton is a city in the southeast of the US state Washington . The place has 2655 inhabitants and is located in Columbia County , whose county seat (administrative seat) he is.
In 1806 the Lewis and Clark expedition stopped east of what is now Dayton. The first non-Indian settlers settled in 1859. At first, the land was only used as pastureland , but two years later wheat and other cereals were grown , as the soil was sufficiently productive and the rainfall was sufficient. In 1872 the place got its current name and a post office was set up.
Dayton is home to both the oldest railway depot (built in 1881) and the oldest District Court building still in use today (built in 1887) in Washington State. Both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places along with 115 other buildings in the city .
