history

Granary in Starbuck.

The town, named after railroad official WH Starbuck, was originally a branch off the main line of the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company . The city was parceled out in 1894; ten years later the first bank was built. The railway company completed a line eastward from Starbuck to Pomeroy and Pataha City in Garfield County in 1886 . This line was operated until 1981. The city was officially recognized on September 18, 1905. A large stone school building was built in 1910.

In 1914 a bridge was completed over the Snake River downstream from Lyon's Ferry , which significantly reduced rail traffic through the city. The city's economy turned to agriculture and in 1929 the bank failed. The city's population continued to decline until the middle of the 20th century. In 1956 the high school had to close and students had to take the bus to Dayton . Finally, the train station was closed in 1961.

The Snake River Bridge (originally built in 1927 over the Columbia at Vantage , then dismantled in 1963) was rebuilt in the area in 1968 and opened it up for additional traffic over the Snake River. The Little Goose Dam was completed about 9 mi (14 km) northeast of Starbuck in 1970.

Today Starbuck is a quiet, agricultural town with around 130 residents.
